Re: rank the coaches!
There is tons of coaches at this age level who coach high school teams or older level OBA teams and are great situational basketball coaches. They just focus on the fundamentals over the situational at this age group. When you see a team play against Vaughan and they are not running motion offence or traps in the corners, double and triple teaming players etc, it's not because the coaches do not know how to teach those tactics, they just choose not to at this age group.

Re: rank the coaches!
More coaches are focused on the things you said.. 'elbows in' 'dribble with your head up' and are not concerned with coaching 7-10 year old's situational basketball for miracle like buzzer beaters. (of which i have seen one at this age group in years, which was not drawn up by phil jackson like coaching).
Most coaching manuals (for any sport) stress fundamentals to much a greater degree over situational coaching until kids are older (13-14) for many reasons - team play, self confidence amongst all children, mechnical development, etc.
(this is my opinion against yours right, guess you can say both are right)
but i do agree with you that Claude is an outstanding coach, and I am always amazed at how he gets his team to perform. However, in my opinion other coaches could achieve this too.

Re: rank the coaches!
In my eyes, what defines a good coach is not only there ability to teach the fundamental skills, but knowing what to do and when.
If a team is facing a team like Vaughan who is running a motion offence and calling clear outs.. and you as a coach is not recognizing or choosing not to make the changes necessary to combat this... can we really say that that is a good coach because he knows how to teach the fundamentals????
It goes hand in hand.
Thank you Loveball.. you've proved my point... "other coaches COULD achieve this too" .... But don’t.

Re: rank the coaches!
Hey Anavidfan. I agree that Coach Claude is a very good coach, infact probably one of the best in this age group. But to say that Claude is the only real coach out there is crazy. I read one of your posts for the top 5 ballaz category and the top 2 players on your list are players that Coach Devon Jones from YAAACE developed him self from scratch. Plus he took a team full of fourth graders and defeated Coach Claudes Mighty Mighty Panthers in the sba Tournament a couple years back. The amount of wins and losses you get does not determaine how good of a coach you are. Its based on how well your children progress in the future. Believe it or not winning in these age groups doesnt mean much right now. The real test for these coaches will come when these children mature as ball players, and move up a couple age groups. Then you can judge whos better at the x's & o's game. So yes Coach Claude is great but do not undermind all the other coaches out there because their win total doesnt match up with his.

Re: rank the coaches!
Coach Mac .......I'm not one to watch the win\loss ratio of a coach to determine their worth.. there is alot that goes into being a good coach besides that.. but we should all be careful , alot of the boys in this age group that are rated on a certain level do not owe their praise to the coaching they received but becasue of their individual talent.

Re: rank the coaches!
How Do you think that talent was developed. You think kids are born with the ball in their hand. Do you think anybody can just throw on a jersey and call them self a rep player. These kids half to be developed into rep players before they can even step on the court. By the way about those 2 players i mentioned before. I was there since the begining of there development and believe me Devon Jones is the reason why those boys are as talented as they are.
And since you think theres no coaches out there. Watch out for yaaace's major atom boys this year . Even better come to hoop dome November 14th so you can see Yaaace Take on Vaughan.

Its not a matter of being bitter. Its just telling it like it is. Dont get me wrong. I think Claude is great, and looking at his resume he is indeed one of the top coaches out there. I just dont think he's the only coach. Thats all. By the way im the head coach for the YAAACE BANTAM BOYS. So if you follow OBA Basketball I shouldnt have to say anything else.

Im sure it starts at 1pm. It's a charity game hosted by the Toronto Police force called Shoot Hoops not Guns. And it's a free event so people come out and watch some good ball.

Re: rank the coaches!
Let me say big up to the entire coaching fraternity, parents and athletes!!!
The word “coach” is the most used word in the English language.
It is a word that embodies leadership, direction, vision, instruction, wisdom, insight etc. Let’s keep the on going "best player/coach" diatribe in perspective. Basketball should be a conduit to facilitate academic achievement and subsequently civic engagement. The latter is coming from a teacher and coach who have worked with scores of talented athletes who lost their eyes (metaphor) and subsequently their way. Our prisons and cemeteries are filled with those young men… The fact is those young men lost their eyes because there are too many adults caught up in the final score on score boards; x’s and o’s etc. Let’s keep things in perspective. How can an adult classify a youth (20 year old Coach Mac) as bitter? Muhammad Ali astutely articulated "Service to others is the rent we pay for your room here on earth." Coach Mac is paying his rent; so are countless numbers of coaches across the GTA. Coach Mac has dedicated himself to a number of children and youth. Let’s not even mention that his team is one of the best teams in North America for his age group.
In my thoughts as much as I reflect on the practice we just had, or the game my team just played, or the kid on my team who is an absolute stud and whose development is ahead of the learning continium or the kid who is having difficulty running our sets; I more so think about the little boy I see frequently in the back of Driftwood Avenue 9:00 P.M roaming the streets on a school night when I am doing my drop offs, or the kid from downtown whose parents are clueless as to his best interest… Wining is relative!!! I have won tons of game I have lost and vice versa. Wining is all 12 of the boys/girls on our teams and the hundreds in our organizations getting 4 year scholarship/free education when they are 17 years old, scoring high on their SAT’s and passing the mandated standardized test like EQAO and the grade 10 literacy test with flying colors along the way. The latter will ensure that they are productive members of society…
There is no rivalry between YAAACE and Vaughn.
Coach Claude gets it. He understands the process. With that said we are both intense and want the best for our athletes on and off the court.
I don’t believe in anonymity; this is coach Devon Jones from YAAACE Major Atom Boys.

Re: rank the coaches!
Hats off to both organizations and the coaches that put in the time work and effort! The track records for both speak for themselves and the kids involved continue to stay involved, wanting to get better, compete and receive guidance from these coaches! Makes out for it to be a competitive season, which is what REP ball is about! Good luck on the seasons Coaches! That game should be exciting and a great opener to a entertaining OBA season ahead!

Re: rank the coaches!
I'm actually amazed how this topic has taken a life of it's own.
We went from ranking the coaches to discussing the plight of our youth in high risk communities.. interesting to say the least...off topic, but interesting none the less!
Coach mac - I understand your positioning and beg to differ.
Baller mom - it may be interesting for you to know that I am not afflicated with YAAACE or Vaughan
Coach Devon from YAAACE Major Atom - I don't believe in anoymity either...this is a parent who is disappointed with the coaching displayed in this age group over the years.
Know the Game - Thanks for playing the mediator , but it would be nice to actually know you views on the intial topic.
