Peel Playoffs

The regular season wrapped up today and 12 teams qualified for the playoffs, the top two in each division. The 6 first place teams will be seeded 1-6 by the coaches and the 6 second place teams will be seeded 7-12 by the coaches. If I have my tie-breakers correct, the teams are:

Based on past habits of coaches, records, and quality of tournament play, I predict the following order:

1. D'Youville
2. Leger
3. Goetz
4. Lorne Park
5. Cawthra
6. Notre Dame
7. Campion
8. Aquinas
9. Carmel
10. Loyola
11. Turner
12. Glenforest

The playoff match-ups would then be:

1st Round
Cawthra - Glenforest
Notre Dame - Turner
Campion - Loyola
Aquinas - Carmel

2nd Round
D'Youville - Aquinas/Carmel
Leger - Campion/Loyola
Goetz - Notre Dame/Turner
Lorne Park - Cawthra

Just like last year you can see that the best intentions of the rule-makers will lead to an imbalance in the early round playoff match-ups. Last year, it was the second round match between what many people thought were the top two teams in Peel and also allowing a weaker team to be the second ROPSSAA AAAA rep. This year, it looks like three of the top 6 teams in Peel are all grouped together in the same quarter-final path. I know the current format saves on travel but I wish they would bring back tiered league play. It might help distribute things a little better.

My predictions are:

Cawthra over Glenforest
Notre Dame over Turner
Campion over Loyola
Aquinas over Carmel

2nd Round
D'Youville over Aquinas
Campion over Leger (in a reverse of their league result; just a hunch that I know will be criticized)
Goetz over Notre Dame
Lorne Park over Cawthra

Semi-Finals
D'Youville over Lorne Park
Campion over Goetz

Final
D'Youville over Campion

According to the ROPSSAA scores website, Notre Dame is 7-0 with 397 PF and 76 PA!

Notre Dame also plays in a very weak division. When they attended the Rimrocker, they were 0-3. IMO, while they will likely be the 6th seed, they are probably no better than the 9th or 10th best team in Peel.
