Matt Bonner to play for National Team?

Post by Coach Clement on Sat Nov 22, 2008 8:33 am

I was watching Eric Smith the other night and they interviewed the Red Rocket.

He professed the wish to suit up for the National Team. He has a residence in Canada and a grandfather who was Canadian. I believe his wife is also Canadian.

He could help us in a big way! He loves Canada and remembers his Raptor days fondly.

He needs some political help to be approved. What do you think?

That would be a big help we could play him at the Sf

My starting line up would be

Steve Nash 1

Olu Famutimi 2

Matt Bonner 3

Joel Anthony 4

Sameul Dalembert 5

6th Man

Jamaal Magloire

I think the only way this would be possible is if Leo gets kicked out of head coach position

I Feel Basketball Canada should concentrate on the olympics in 2016 and focus on the crop of talent at the 17 and under level bringing back the old is not a progress but rather a regress .

Canada needs to do a better job in scouting. I Mean they should be at more high school/OUA/college games, scouting from coast to coast. Hopefully soon our program can rise. I swear Angola(Africa) is ahead of us in the FIBA World Rankings no offense to Angola but we should have a better program(then them).

I agree with Maple Kid - bring back Jay!! The man is well-respected in the world of basketball and will probably be able to entice some our recent 'losses' back to the National Team.

umm
you guys been watching the kids in the US
Myck Kabongo
and others like Devoe
who are in D1 programs
they will be good especially since they are in the american flow right now
they will be good
so canada basketball has a good future
and big men such as andrew nicholson
david tyndale as a guard
and others who are still to graduate
it will be great to watch them play

after we see the under 19 national team perform this july at the worlds, we should have a pretty good idea of what the future looks like for basketball canada.

our senior team in currently ranked 19 in the world and i wouldn't be suprised if that ranking goes up every year bit by bit for the next 5 years.

also there are currently 4 canadians in the nba right now. i don't think that number will drasticly increase but it will slowly start going up year by year.

Carl English is performing very well in Spain, averaging 17 ppg with beautiful matches, he's shooting acceptably from behind the arc and I think he deserves to be a starter in his National Team (I'm spanish). He's playing the Spanish league, unoficially known as the second best league in the world, just behind the NBA (a lot of NBA players have played here: Gasol, Calderon, Scola, Nocioni, Marc Gasol, Ukic, Darrell Armstrong, Rudy Fernandez...), and he's 6th in the scorer's ranking (for example, JC NAvarro, who last year played for Grizzlies averaging 11 ppg and now he's playing for Barcelona, is 10th in the same ranking with 15.2 ppg), shooting 56 % from 2, very good average for a guard, and 38% from 3, he has time to improve his shoot from long distance.

I hope Canada improve his basketball level, i really do. From Spain, Ruben Rodriguez
