Re: Whose Better in their prime? Kobe or Jordan?
Preface: I grew up watching Jordan play. He was, along with Wayne Gretzky, the sport god of my youth.
Now...a few things to clear up for those who obviously never lived back then (or are too young to still remember)
No, Jordan was not the only elite player on his team. Do I need to list the names? That Bulls team was amazing, plain and simple.
I think also people sometimes have difficulty leaving "Brand Jordan" out of their psyche when they reminisce about Jordan's days. If they are honest they will realize that at least some of how they feel about Jordan can be attributed to the - much deserved, yes - hype that surrounds his name. On that count I say, unreservedly, that there is no other player that has brought such a high profile to the sport of basketball than Michael Jordan.
I actually couldn't stand Kobe when he first started. I hated his attitude, his 'spoiled brat' role (or at least as it was portrayed in the media). I have since come to appreciate just how great a player he actually is. People who say that he doesn't share the ball or doesn't attack the rim clearly have little real basketball IQ themselves. Gasol doesn't score like he does because Kobe's hogging the ball. Many of Gasol's looks come from plays where Bryant draws the double or even triple team and then dishes off. Sortof reminds me of Jordan drawing heat and then finding Kerr out on the wing. And what is this about Kobe complaining? Give it a break, noone got on the refs more than Jordan. They know the game - well - and call the refs on their foolishness, good for them. When you're at that level of play, you expect the best refereeing.
Will he surpass Jordan? I don't know...likely he will if he keeps going the way he is. Is he necessarily better? "Greatest" is relative to what people remember from when they were most immersed in the sport. For example, going back to my preface...is Wayne Gretzky the greatest hockey player who's ever lived? The stats say he is, and he has the Cups and the titles to prove it. Have there been players since that approach or even surpass his level? You be the judge, the game is different now and there have been some truly great players since him.
It's interesting to note however that Gretzky, much like Jordan, did his best work when he was surrounded by a select set of guys for those 6-8 years or whatever. When they played with different teams later in their careers, it wasn't the same. It didn't feel cohesive, you were just watching "the team superstar" rather than "the superstar team led by....". There's a huge difference.
So you have to ask yourself...could Jordan do what he did if he and Kobe switched teams and eras? Would he be as good, or would he be worse? Could Kobe do what he does surrounded by Pippen, Rodman, Kerr, just to name a few? Or would he be even better than he is now?
I don't have the answer, but time has a funny way of immortalizing our sports heroes. Make no mistake, in 20 years we will definitely be talking about just how great Kobe was/is.
I'll be honest..when I consider how the game was when I was a teenager watching every Bulls and Lakers game faithfully..I see Kobe actually excelling even further in that era maybe even more than now. Now...can I say the same about Jordan, playing in this day with how the game is now played? For some reason when I look at it that way, I begin to doubt EVER SO SLIGHTLY (so don't lose your cool lol!)
