Post by TABO Liaison Officer Fri Feb 24, 2012 12:21 am

The Toronto Association of Basketball Officials (TABO) is hosting the Irv Salsberg Jr. Boys Tournament March 1-3, 2012 at Blessed Mother Theresa in Scarborough. The aim is to fill a 16-team draw with the top level of talent from within the GTA and outlying areas.

Tournament play will begin Thursday and will continue throughout the day Friday, culminating with games on Saturday. At the outset, our intention was to charge teams an entry of $300 with a 3-game guarantee for each team. At this date, I would like to offer entry at $200/team, with the same 3-game guarantee.

The following teams have been invited to participate, with confirmations still waiting:

Confirmed entries: C W Jeffreys, Mother Teresa, J Clarke Richardson, Jean Vanier (Richmond Hill), Birchmount Park CI, Oakwood, St. Edmund Campion, Eastern Commerce, Ste. Marguerite D'Youville, and other top schools pending administration approval.

The three Peel teams will probably NOT be there. The Peel playoffs begin March 1st....with the Final scheduled for March 7th.

Why wouldn't you guys look into this? There is a ropssaa website that clearly states these dates.

Too bad for Goetz, d'Youville, and Campion.

Once again Peel gets the snub.....

yeah it would be to bad, Peel teams would not be able to attend. 2 of the top 5 teams are from peel.

I think peel should finish their playoffs with he seniors. Peel teams can't bring juniors to Ofsaa (assuming they are still in the playoffs).

Wasn't there a GTA championship been scheduled for after march break? what happened with that?

Confirmed entries for the Irv Salsberg Memorial Tournament (in no particular order):

C W Jeffreys, Mother Teresa, J Clarke Richardson, Jean Vanier (Richmond Hill), Birchmount Park CI, Oakwood, St. Edmund Campion, Eastern Commerce, Ste. Marguerite D'Youville, and other top schools pending administration approval..

Please note the presence of the Peel region teams. Let's have no more of the "Peel gets the snub" talk. This tournament is in place to celebrate the contributions of a great referee in Toronto and it's disappointing when all people can do is find ways to poke holes in the format. Waiting for every region to finish playoffs means this tournament wouldn't take place until April...when boys OBA/AAU season is in full swing. It couldn't happen. Instead of complaining about how much of an injustice is being done, help find a solution.

The way it looks right now Campion did not make the playoffs so they could more than attend the tournament.
Why would Dy and Goetz attend risking injuries the tournament starts March 01st same day playoffs starts. If Goetz or Dy makes it to the finals of the tournament which is the Saturday this gives the players 1 day rest to play a semi-final on Monday. This tournament have nothing to give but winning Ropssaa juniors is a big deal especially for these 2 top teams that have work hard all season.
I am not saying anything bad about your tournament i am just saying it is not worth it for the 2 top teams in Peel at that time.Personally i would not like to see Dy go up against Carr durning their playoffs fear of injuries .Dy seniors took a hard loss after a good season,i dont think we want to see the juniors go down too But it is up to the coaches.

From what I have heard it may be less than 16 teams.

The draw should be out soon.

Unfortunately the tournament had to be cancelled in spite of a great deal of effort by a number of people especially Jason Andrade (TABO Liaison Officer) to save it.

The tournament was undermined by the last minute withdrawl of a number of teams making the completion of this tournament impossible.

Apart from the disappointment of not seeing some of the GTA's top teams in competition it was a tournament dedicated to the memory of a very respected member of the refereeing community. It is disappointing that it could no longer remain viable.

Hopefully it will return bigger and better than ever in the near future!

Why not a 12 team draw? or an 8 team?

Peel didnt get snubbed. The fact of the matter is that Peel junior play offs run way too late into the season. To be honest Peel juniors could have finished WELL before the seniors did. The problem has nothing to do with snubbing and more with the ridiculousness of stretching a 9 game season ( 6 league games, 3 play off games to win championship) over the course of 5 months

I agree about Junior playoffs in Peel stevelogan92!

It makes post-season tournaments very difficult because you are looking at post-March Break and that is not really workable imo.

Jason was doing a great deal of work and unfortunately it didn't go on but
it is hard to get 16 teams to commit in less then a weeks time.
Hopeully next year it can run and maybe more time than a week to organize it.
Next year, maybe start inviting the teams earlier.

I think you used a wrong choice of word here
"undermined"-------to attack by indirect, secret, or underhand means; To weaken.

I dont think that was the case the promoters may had good intentions but you have to look at it from the coaches views. But overall you guys did not think A lot of teams are going to Ofsaa and are using their junior players take a look at Carr team and you would see.
Here is the coaches choice Play in a junior tournament and get squat or take the best players to a top tournament.
In Peel Ropssaa is more important.
You want your tournament nothing wrong in moving dates .

Peel playoffs are designed around the various sports needs in Peel. An invitational tournament is not, and should not, be a major concern in formulating the schedule. If the date works; great. If not; the league and playoffs obviously come first.

This year was an anomoly with the far-too-short regular season. However, in most seasons, and one hopes in future seasons, they play more games than this year. In all ROPSSAA sports, the junior playoffs are held after the senior playoffs are over in order to provide enough flexibility to ensure everything is wrapped up in time for OFSAA qualification. Someone will come back and ask me how other regions do it and my best answer is; I guess the circumstances are different. I do know that Peel schools have the largest average student population of any GTA region so perhaps there are simply far gym bookings preventing the seasons of the various sports from being compressed as much as in other regions.
