Bonnies add Canadian guard Matthew Wright
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — St. Bonaventure men's basketball head coach Mark Schmidt announced on Thursday that Matthew Wright, a guard from Toronto, Ontario, has accepted an athletics grant-in-aid to attend St. Bonaventure and play for the Bonnies beginning this fall. Wright will be a freshman with four seasons of eligibility.
Wright, who is 6-foot-3, attended Martingrove Collegiate Institute in his hometown. He led Martingrove to a 34-9 record and the Toronto District School Board Triple-A title last season, averaging 23 points, 7.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Wright was named to the Toronto Star's "Starting Five" as one of the top five players in the greater Toronto area in the class of 2010. Martingrove coach Shawn Gray called Wright "the best perimeter shooter he has ever coached."
"Matthew is a guy who can really shoot and he has a good basketball IQ," said Schmidt. "His strength is shooting it from deep, but he can also take it off the dribble. Certainly, with (junior center) Andrew (Nicholson) drawing a lot of attention in the post, we need perimeter guys who can knock down shots. Matthew is a nice piece of the puzzle and we're thrilled he's committed to join us."
Wright is the second guard to join the Bonnies in the past three weeks, joining Sam deHaas (Den Bosch, The Netherlands). He will join Nicholson as the second Canadian native on the Bonnies' roster.
St. Bonaventure will return eight players, including four that started 12 or more games, from last year's team that posted its second straight 15-win season, finished in a tie for eighth place in the Atlantic 10 and picked up its first A-10 postseason win since 2002.
