This league appears set to go as currently configured it features six teams from across the city playing a home-and-home schedule.

This is certain to be a very positive innovation for the TDCAA. This will produce some exciting basketball and will provide a high level of competition.

Great job by all concerned in getting this up and running!

York Region has been running an alternate version of this format for the past two years. We are now headed into the 3rd year.

First Stage - Regional Play - You play all the schools close to you. (cuts down on travel)

6 teams in North 1 6 teams in East 1 6 teams in West 1 6 teams in Central 1
6 teams in North 2 6 teams in East 2 6 teams in West 2 6 teams in Central 2
ex The 6 teams in North 1 play each other (determined by proximity) top 3 teams are in tier 1 bottom 3 in tier 2

Second Stage - Crossover Game (home court advantage changes from year 1 to year 2) at this stage jr's and sr's may be going to different locations

1st place from North 1 Division vs 1st from North 2 division
    2nd vs 2nd
    3rd vs 3rd
    4th vs 4th
    5th vs 5th
    6th vs 6th
Winner of this game gives you your ranking. ex the winner of the first place game is the true #1 seed from the north, while the loser of that game is the #2 seed from the north. You do this from 1-12 for each of the 4 divisions.

Third Stage - Tiered play (home court advantage changes on a two year cycle)

The top finishers from West Central East and North play each other.
The second place finishers from West Central East and North play each other.
ex. In the first place pool, who ever finishes first is the TRUE #1 seed in the region going into playoffs.
All the way from 1 - 24 for tier 1
All the way from 25-48 for tier 2

    Fourth Stage - Playoff Format
    Teams 1-8 first round bye
9-24 play in the first round

    Coach Clement:

Have plans been made to determine who plays in the league from year to year (i.e. the top 4 teams stay in and the bottom 2 are "relegated" to the East/West divisions)?

Coach with due respect, that system is not very similar in my opinion.

It is a good system but just not too similar!

This is more of a superleague.

It's similar when you get to the third round. Tiered play.

In our format you have to earn your place. How is placement in the super league determined in the TDCAA?? Who plays who??

I'm with Coach Clement; I don't think they are close enough to call similar. This is closer to what you see in some cities outside the GTA where the elite teams from across the area form a tier 1 super league and the rest of the teams play in geographic tier 2 divisions right from the get go. They do not progress there through a series of stages; the division is from the start of the season.

Coach C, what are the six teams? Carr, MT and Pope are sure things and I would assume Jean Vanier is in the mix but I'm curious who the other two are; perhaps Michael Power and Monsignor Jonson or Brebeuf?

I will wait till things are firmer before I give the details.

I will say some of your surmises are correct but there are other teams in the mix you did not name.

As tiered systems go, I like the TDSB baseball set-up. 4 team pools that are based on geography, play 3 games, and then split into Tier I and II for the remainder of the season.

Basketball with more teams and games could do 5 or 6 team pools; it might allow for some Tiered play without having to declare before the season.

Obviously the TDCAA system will be decided by Coach Clement and others but I think it would be interesting to have a few high profile double or triple headers (like what the Big 5 used to do in Philadephia at the Palestra) at some University or College gyms to raise funds and generate interest.

There will be teams from the TDCAA East and the TDCAA West.

They will play each other twice either home-and-home or at a neutral site if the tripleheader idea pans out!

Some games will be evening games to allow greater access to the fans.

Here are the six teams involved: MT, Fr. Henry Carr, Pope John Paul II, Senator O'Connor, Jean Vanier and Fr. Redmond. Each team will play ten games.

A number of doubleheaders will be played and even some tripleheaders. Some of the games will be in the evening and others after school.

Some teams have given up home games to be a part of a doubleheader at a neutral site. The coaches were very accomodating in that respect.

This will be a very exciting undertaking and should benefit all teams by providing high-level competition for all involved!

There are still a few scheduling details to be finalized.

So the TDSB set up is that one team plays 3 games, then depending on how they do they get split into teir 1 and 2 ? After that how many games do they play? and is the playoff format the same? They shouldn't have changed the season set up.

I was curious about OFSAA qualification. I know the TDCAA rule is that the team that finishes highest in the playoffs among all teams in their OFSAA division (AAAA, AAA , AA, A) earns the berth so does that mean that all six teams in the new city-wide league are automatically considered ahead of any teams at the lower tiers?

For example, assuming Jean Vanier is the only school to declare AA in the city wide league (as I believe they are now under 900 and MT and FHC always declare AAAA), would they advance to OFSAA autmatically, even if they finished 6th?

No... they have switched to a similar OFSAA qualification as the TDSB... all teams make play-offs in their OFSAA declaration (ie A, AA, etc) They will be seeded based on regular season record, however, if there is a tie in the records, the city wide team would be given the higher seed, or at least that is how I understood it.

    Yesterday:
Pope had a very comfortable win over Jean Vanier (close to 20 pts.)

MT struggled a little with O'Connor in the first half but went on a huge third quarter run scoring 34 points in the 3rd quarter alone and finished with a very nice win in the end.

    Sorry no game scores.

    To answer question above:
Pope and MT play @ PJII on Dec. 16. The first meeting of MT and Carr in the league is Wed. Jan. 12 @ MT as part of a doubleheader.
