WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
With all this talk about Prep schools, NCAA, eligibility, etc I was thinking that people should start to compile a list of athletes who have gone to the NCAA (through PREP or Not), CIS, CCAA, etc and start looking at what they are doing now.

Re: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
I think what he wants to know, which is a great question but will take far too long is what are these guys doing after basketball???? Do they have jobs? Did they get a degree? I'm not sure if it's fair to put kids names on here that may have come short of their goals...they probably already feel like a let down and we shouldn't kick them when they're down. I know where your going with this but I'd rather you comment about adults and programs than the kids.

Re: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
The Prep school issue and the honest/realistic pursuit of NCAA basketball scholarships by GTA basketball players is really complicated. There is intensive coverage and scrutiny about the whether to go Prep or remain here and play out your high school eligibility. Should a player pay for their schooling at a CIS school and probably get an opportunity to play more or accept an NCAA basketball scholarship and receive very few minutes. I will stand by my position: Prep schools aren't for everyone and the same goes for the NCAA.
Tne mass exodus concerns me because most of the GTA players are seriously compromising their education and are not leaving for greener pastures. We have a lot of kids that are coming back empty handed and disappointed, however, we as a basketball community don't talk about those stories. Ideally, I would like to see a little more balance when we talk about prep schools and the awarding of NCAA Scholarships. I want elementary school and high school players who are reading this to know the good, the bad and the ugly about this whole process. There are many ways to get to the NCAA or play post secondary ball and we should make young people more aware of their options.
Here is a list of some recent GTA players who stayed in the Toronto area for their high school years, managed to secure a NCAA basketball scholarship and are currently playing:
2011
Kevin Pangos (Denison) Gonzaga University-WA
Justin Dennis (Anderson) University of Maine-ME
Kevin Blake (Oakwood) Elon University-NC
2010
Matthew Wright (Martingrove) St. Bonaventure-NY
Julian Clarke (Oakwood) University of Santa Clara-CA
Stefan Nastic (Thornhill) Stanford University-CA
Stevan Manojlovic (Martingrove) Drexel University-PA
Manny Sahota (D'Youville) Cornell University-NY
2009
Alwayne Bigby (Eastern Commerce) Northeastern University-MA
Jonathan Tull (Pickering) Central Connecticutt...transferred to Acadia University (NS)
Rob Gagliardi (Pickering) Cansuis College....transferred to Centennial College
2008
Andrew Nicholson (Father Goetz) St. Bonaventure University-NY
Keaton Cole (Eastern Commerce) Western Carolina University-NC
Chuck Murray (Eastern Commerce) Wagner College-NY
Devoe Joseph (Pickering) University of Minnesota-MN
Alex Hill (Eastern Commerce) Cornell University....now at the University of Toronto
The next two big signings out of the GTA for the 2011-2012 should be Dyshawn Pierre out of Anderson Collegiate in Whitby and Aguna Okolie out of Dennis O'Connor in Ajax. Agunwa is the best kept secret in GTA high school basketball history! My point is that it is not necessary for everyone to leave the GTA for prep school. There are plenty of recent success stories right here. I guess players have to ask themselves "the why question"...Why do you need to attend a prep school? Is it for the exposure?...in my opinion that is a poor reason in the internet era. Are you doing it for the sole purpose of exposure to better competition like Andrew Wiggins? That type of situation is rare. Are you doing it to get around the NCAA Clearinghouse???????
Again, I just want to point out that we have a fair amount of players that have remained up here and managed to secure NCAA basketball scholarships without going to a Prep School. I think that needs to be mentioned and celebrated. If you're a talented player and have good grades, then you don't need to attend a prep school in the United States to obtain an athletic scholarship.

Re: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Tristan Thompson and Corey Joseph were outstanding players before they went to the US. Their story is not typical of most players who go down to the US.
Realfacts is right and we shouldn't kick kids when they are down, but those same kids should come back and tell there story. That could be some of the most valuable information for people to hear..... Good outcome or bad.
Ok what about the older guys who went to the states??
What about guys like Phil Dixon, Martin Keene, Rowan Barrett, etc, etc What are they doing now?
Anyone?

I think it's great that we are listing the kids who stayed in Canada and made it to the NCAA. But what I really want to know is where are the guys that went down (early or not) and what are they doing now.
and yes Blake is at ELON University in North Carolina.

Re: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Here is a list of most of the players that have gone down to prep schools and what they are currently doing. I may have made a mistake here or there. These are more or less the success stories....most of them have managed to find something suitable after the years they have spent in the U.S. Prep system. Personally, I more concerned about the list of players that go down and come back home because their schooling situation and basketball experience were far from ideal. However, we won't go there.
Here it is:
The Obvious
Tristan Thompson (D'Youville-Brampton) Findlay Prep Cleveland Cavaliers
Corey Joseph (Pickering-Pickering) Findlay Prep San Antonio Spurs
The Pioneers
Junior Cadougan (Eastern-Toronto) Christian Life Center Marquette Univ.

Jason Calliste (Pope-Toronto) Quality Education Academy Univ. of Detroit

Re: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
MONTREAL -- Kris Joseph of Montreal and Andrew Nicholson of Mississauga, Ont., were named Monday to the pre-season Wooden Award list that honours early frontrunners for the college basketball player of the year.
Joseph (Syracuse University) and Nicholson (St. Bonaventure University), were selected to the sport's most prestigious top 50 list in a pre-season poll of college basketball journalists.
Nicholson, a 6-foot-9 centre, was one of the dominant big men in the country last season for St. Bonaventure, a small Catholic school in western New York state.
He averaged 20.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game and was named to the All-Atlantic 10 conference first team.
Joseph is an athletic 6-foot-7 wing who emerged last season as one of the top players in the Big East, the nation's top basketball conference.
He led the Syracuse Orange in scoring at 14.3 points per game and placed second in rebounding (5.2) and steals (1.5). He was named to the All-Big East third team, the first Canadian to be so honoured in more than 25 years.
Joseph is a second cousin of Cory Joseph of Pickering, Ont., who was a first-round draft pick of the NBA's San Antonio Spurs in June.
Some pro scouting sites believe that Nicholson and Kris Joseph will be selected in the 2012 NBA draft. They're among a bumper crop of young talent that has fans hoping for a breakthrough this decade by the Canadian men's basketball team.
The Wooden Award All American Team will include the top 10 players in NCAA Division I basketball. It will be announced during the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament in late March 2012.
