    Steve Nash Empty Steve Nash

Post by bigred Thu May 10, 2012 6:00 am

I have a hard time liking this guy as a person,as a player i know he is good.I think when someone makes it big and cannot come back to represent their country to me they are losers.
Since Nash make it to the NBA can someone show me where he came back and represent Canada in basketball. Now they made him manager.

I just read this in an article
"Playing for Canada never seem like a good idea for Jamaal Magloire so he has never since joining the NBA.

My views are if you made it big and cannot come back to represent your country then two words F--- O--.

There are more ways to represent your country than just being a player.

Is Steve Nash not representing Canada by acting as the General Manager of the National team?

He can accomplish more for the game in that capacity than he ever could as a player (as great a player as he may have been or is).

Look at how he has energized the youth of our country already. Just go on Twitter and see the names of the young players who have endorsed this appointment!

Bigred... you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

Now here is mine... I think your post reeks of pure ignorance.

While under contract with an NBA team, Nash represented Canada for 6 summers. And several before that.

His body started to breakdown and he had some serious back problems... and still does now... and he needed summers to rest and rehab. Many say his body broke down because of all the extra time he put in for the NT.

    AbSOlutely petro!

Anyone who watched the Suns saw Nash prone on the court to ease his ailing back!

Pains me to watch a great athlete diminshed by injury. I think back to sports greats like Mickey Mantle, Bobby Orr and Kirk Gibson crippled to the point of ordinary performance.

We don't need any cheapshots on such as these that's a for sure!

It does give me some concern if Nash were to appear in a Raptor uniform. How much longer can he perform like the player we have seen in the past?

Still the thought of such an eventuality intrigues me! Running the pick-and-roll with J-V priceless!

Petro and Clements did you feel it .Another SLAP in face lol.

"Lots of fans and those close to the Raptors are awfully upset by this turnabout. Some even have accused Nash of “using” Toronto and the New York Knicks as leverage, as if landing a deal worth $25 million over three years rather than $36 million (Toronto’s offer) demonstrates any boardroom ruthlessness. Knicks fans feel snubbed, too, though at least their team isn’t the one (yet) locked into a $20 million offer sheet to Landry Fields, an ill-advised Raptors move to entice Nash.

Fact is, the Raptors’ feelings are hurt and they’re a little embarrassed. They have to scramble now after failing on a move that was more about buzz than basketball anyway."

I think Lowry will be a better pickup in the long run. He fits in with the Raptor roster and embodies what Casey is looking for in a point guard.

I accept the decision Nash made for him it is the better decision at this point in his career.

Lakers will be better in the short term IF his back holds up!

I don't see how Nash used the Raptors as all media reports were that the team approched him with the big offer. He also did not know whether the Lakers would take him on board when he spoke to them.

Free agency is just that, free, and the player is free to talk to any team about playing for them. Colangelo's gambit in tying up the Knicks with the Fields offer sheet would only have been effective if they were the only other team with cap space for Nash.

I did read a quote from Nash a few days ago where he talked about wanting to play for a serious contender and he did say something to the effect that the Raptors were not quite there yet. He listened to their offer, and presumably those of the Knicks and Lakers, and selected the one he liked the best. Had he said he would come here and then backed out a couple of weeks later, we could rightly feel betrayed, but not in this case.

Another aspect to this is that Sessions unwisely opted out of the last year of his deal and opened a spot for Nash on the Lakers. The starting point guard spot was available and there is a decent backup in Blake, who can play 15 - 20 minutes a game, and start some games if Nash needs a maintenance night off. Blake will likely back up Nash, the same role he had when Sessions, and previously Fish, were starting. Here, there would have immediately been the Calderon - Nash issue, and Nash is a consummate team guy who may not have wanted to make those kind of waves.

Bigred - I think your quote is from CBS Sports, and also think you might be referring to the Nash discussion on The Fan - I'm glad you used quotation marks to indicate you used a source. I think the John Chick article on the CBC website has some relevant points, some of which you cite in the quote and some raised by others on this site, pro and con. Check it out.

The only thing I would say about this now is that Steve Nash has a very high set of professional and ethical standards recognized by many in the entire world of sports. He has always conducted himself at the highest most respectful level of human conduct. He is not a person who would play with peoples' feelings. He certainly gave everything, and still does, to Canada, and if you review his careeer with BBall Canada, that is obvious. He has dedicated much to his country, that is above question. The people who are feeleing hurt about this - and i notice this is part of the quote you use so i assume you may not be feeling such yourself - simply do not know the Nash file. Good thing is that these people will get over it and enjoy Nash's skills and style in LA. If one person boos Nash when the Laker come to TO it is a sign of great immaturity with Toronto fans. It is one thing to be disappointed (and i am disappointed he didn't land with the Rap) but it a totally different thing to be ignorant.

Board - potentially, there could be 2 players from canada playing for the Laker this year, both from the west coast, kind of weird but neat...

Did I feel it... yes! Because selfishly I wanted him to play here.

But if I was Nash... I woulda done the same thing... so I totally get it... and I'm over it.

And as Bernie says... great immaturity to anyone who boos Nash... and you know the ACC will have those idiots in the stands... the same ones who STILL boo VC and T-Mac

Can't see Calderon staying here as a backup to Lowry, at $10 M per year.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes down. Not sure how Bayless fits on this team, with his breakneck style. They've made him a qualifying offer, but in this crazy free agent market someone will likely offer him a long term big money deal. Perhaps he can fit as a shooter/scorer off the bench, if he can harnass his game and play under control.

With the team's qualifying offer to Weems, offer sheet to Fields, drafting of Ross and DeRozan and James Johnson on board, this team suddenly has a lot of possible swingmen.

What a brutal week for the Knicks --- with the Rockets huge offer sheet to Lin, the Raptors to Landry and now out of the running for Nash. The life of an NBA GM.

Folks - interesting article by Jeff Blair on the Globe website... fairly objective of Nash's motivation... and repercussions to the rap ...

Nash inflicts more than just flesh wound on Colangelo

I've been listening to Blair all week... (not sure why)

I think Blair's been pretty shallow about the whole thing.

And I think his opinions and writings on this matter are geared to get a reaction from the emotional fan.

What Blair needs to recognize more is that the NBA is a business first and foremost... and Nash was just as shrewd as Colangelo and all the other GM's vying for his services.

Colangelo understands that... I'm sure BC is sore for not gettiing Nash here - but he isn't taking it personally... because it's business... pure and simple.

Does Blair understand that??? Not so much... but if he does... then he is simply writing to pull the strings of the broken hearted... which is shrewd journalism.

But hey... that's a business too!

    Great post petro!

And as in business you move on and Colangelo did just that and came up with a great alternative in the person of Lowry!
