FAQ: OFSAA Regions and Berths Empty FAQ: OFSAA Regions and Berths

Post by Xavier Rimrocker Sun Oct 26, 2008 12:27 pm

Since this gets asked so many times, I thought I would list the berths for those posters who frequently inquire on the board. (Rick feel free to bookmark for posters if you think it will help reduce bandwidth usage.)

A quick primer on the regions:
COSSA: Central Ontario (e.g. Belleville, Peterborough, Trenton, Port Hope)
CISSA: Private schools in and around the GTA that don't play in their local regions
CWOSSA: Central-Western Ontario (e.g. Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Brantford, Owen Sound)
EOSSAA: Eastern Ontario (e.g. Cornwall, Kingston, and the Ottawa Valley)
GBSSA: Georgian Bay (e.g. Barrie & Simcoe Region, Muskoka Region, Parry Sound)
GHAC: Golden Horseshoe, Hamilton Catholic and Halton (e.g. Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Georgetown)
LOSSA: Lake Ontario, Durham Region (e.g. Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington)
NCSSAA: National Capital, City of Ottawa but not surrounding Ottawa Valley
NEOAA: Northeastern Ontario, Timmins and surrounding areas
NOSSA: Northern Ontario, Sudbury, North Bay and surrounding areas
NWOSSAA: Northwestern Ontario, Thunder Bay, Kenora, and all areas west of Lake Superior)
ROPSSAA: Region of Peel, Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon
SOSSA: Southern Ontario, Hamilton Public and Niagara Region
SWOSSAA: Southwestern Ontario (e.g. Windsor, Sarnia, Chatham)
    TDCAA: Toronto Catholic
    TDSSAA: Toronto Public
WOSSAA: Western Ontario (e.g. London, Woodstock, Stratford)
YRAA: Region of York (e.g. Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Aurora)

When more than one region is listed in the same row, it means there is a playoff between the regional champs (if necessary) to pick one rep. Regions not listed do not send a team to the OFSAA level in question.

Rimrocker, do you have any knowledge as to why Hamilton Public plays in SOSSA and Hamilton Catholic plays in GHAC? Is there a history there?

FAQ: OFSAA Regions and Berths Empty Re: FAQ: OFSAA Regions and Berths

Post by Xavier Rimrocker Sun Oct 26, 2008 2:06 pm

I don't know the definitive answer but I suspect much of it is simply for the sake of convenience. I would guess that Halton is not considered large enough for its own berth while Hamilton is too large to share a berth between Public, Catholic as well as Halton. So they split up the city instead and each half shares with a neighbouring region.

I'm sure there's more to it than that but someone with a deeper knowledge of OFSAA history in the hamilton area would need to answer that.

FAQ: OFSAA Regions and Berths Empty Hamilton

Post by eg Sun Oct 26, 2008 7:33 pm

Years ago the Hamilton Public schools got fed up with Hamilton Catholic schools poaching their players, so they kicked them out. At the time, the Hamilton champion went to SOSSA, so that is where the Public schools continue to play. Hamilton Catholic joined Halton (which is currently both Public and Catholic) to form GHAC.

Was that at the same time that Halton was separated from the Peel Region? The timing would make sense.

Perhaps, Rimrocker, you know something I do not. I believe that NCSSAA gets an additional birth for AA as a team from that association (AY Jackson) won AA ofsaa last year. Perhaps the reigning association only gets the additional birth if one is available? You seem more up to speed on these things than I so please clarify if you know for sure.

The championship region doesn't get an extra berth in AA unless the host region already has two berths (the maximum allowed for any region.)

AAAA is the only region that currently has an open berth every year, even after providing one for the host region.
