NC STATE Standout, Toronto Native Alex “Superman” Johnson to Host Skills Academy

TORONTO, On- The era of the natural, pass first, offense orchestrating point guard is arguably a rarity in today’s game. In efforts to get back to the basics of being a true floor general, professional hoopster Alex Johnson is set to host the “Alex Johnson Point Guard Skills Academy” July 5-6, 2014 at the Falstaff Community Center in Toronto.

“I have had the privilege of playing the role of “floor general” at various levels; from high school all the way to the pros. At each level, I have learned and advanced as a true point guard. Through coaching the 14U Grassroots Canada AAU Team, I have noticed that the point guard position has been tainted with a shoot first, combo triggered mentality. The pure, smart, and cerebral point guard is now a rarity. I want to share with the younger generation in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) the keys of being To The Point, when it comes to the intricacies of being a Point Guard”, stated Johnson.

Johnson began his college career at CSU Bakersfield before transferring his junior year to N.C. State of the vaunted ACC Conference. At State, Alex was called upon to control the floor on offense and lockdown several future NBA point guards including Austin Rivers (New Orleans Pelicans) and Kendall Marshall (Phoenix Suns) on defense. His defense was so good in fact that he was named Team Defensive MVP. He was very instrumental to Wolfpack’s run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. Post college, he had an NBA pre-draft workout with the Toronto Raptors before signing with Romanian league newcomer Timba Timisoara. As a rookie, he led the team in assists and finished second in total points scored.

The Alex Johnson Point Guard Skills Academy seeks to provide boys aged 11-18 guidelines to improve their point guard fundamentals and mechanics. The emphasis will be on skill and character development in a fun, positive, and constructive environment. The camp hopes to help kids reach their full potential both on and off the court.
