BLUES - TORONTO – an expansion of the Scarborough Basketball Association

The Scarborough Basketball Association was founded in 1996 by a group of parents and school teachers looking for a place not only for their children but also for other children in the Scarborough neighbourhood to play basketball in an organized non-profit sports program. Today, close to 1200 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 19 play basketball in both the house league and rep programs. All the coaches and organizers contribute their time on a volunteer basis and have developed a quality basketball program. The Scarborough Basketball Association is a non-profit member of Ontario Basketball.

Recently, in 2010, the organization formed a BLUES Toronto division. Although the BLUES Toronto division was created with the same principles and beliefs as the Scarborough Basketball Association, its goal is to provide opportunities in the city of Toronto for children and youth of all ages to learn and participate in basketball through qualified coaching and to compete in a supportive and focused environment.

In conjunction with The Scarborough Basketball Association, BLUES Toronto has began to develop players this summer via the Summer Skillz which is a summer program aimed directly at improving the skills and basketball abilities of young females in the Greater Toronto Area. BLUES Toronto intends to continue developing players by creating house league programs beginning in March, 2011. The house league program will begin with players from ten to thirteen years of age and eventually as young as four years old in the coming years. In addition to the house league program, the BLUES Toronto will be organizing rep teams for girls in all divisions from U15 (1996) to U19 (1992) beginning in September, 2010. The rep teams will be created with the intentions of providing young female basketball players with the opportunity of gaining basketball experience by playing in the OBA and its provincial championship competitions and of gaining exposure by playing in tournaments throughout the province. Player development is the foundation of the BLUES Toronto division.

Information regarding the BLUES Toronto rep team tryouts and its house league will be posted on the SBA website, www.sbabasketball.ca or can be obtained through Anna Tyzler (District Contact) at aniatm@hotmail.com
