Post by Coach Clement Mon Jan 10, 2011 1:56 pm

A prominent and knowledgeable coach sent me this after I had entered the above - they are not included in the results:

1 Fr. Henry Carr- They are still undefeated

2 Pope John Paul - Like Chaminade very strong leadership in the starting line up

    3 Vaughan

4 Downsview - Not as dominate as in the beginning of the season, very well coached

5 Chaminade - Chaminade is a very good squad and to be honest probably has the best starting 5 in Junior. Record 15-4

6 Oakwood - Glenford and Cody are helping the players around them. They play good team ball and defensively everyone works hard.

    7 St Michael’s

    8 Eastern Commerce

    9 Dunbarton

10 Mother Teresa A young team but will figure it out in the end, not to mention excellent coach.

    11 West Hill

12 Holy Trinity With Anthony Pate playing senior they could have easily conceded the season but one player doesn't make a squad.

    13 St M. d’Youville

    14 St. Joan of Arc

15 Pickering They are having some problems and not close to the talented squad as in previous years. Neville playing senior for a grade 9 PG is huge

    16 Martingrove

Pretty good list I agree. I guess I'm struggling with Father Goetz moving up 4 spots. I mean, maybe beating your own team in an intersquad game, then Jean Vanier (Richmond Hill) and moving into the playoffs helps. But they beat one good team, HB Beal. But lost to two ranked teams and moved up, 4 SPOTS? oh well, it is just a poll.....

Its a poll I just tabulate the votes and post them.

Its all relative. Mother Teresa lost two games won one and moved up. Who did you lose to and how did you win? Who saw all the games with all the teams involved?

For what its worth, its just some coaches opinions. Ten to be exact it would be more reliable if more took part.

Still coaches likely have a better read than most! At least that's what I feel!

It seems to me that every year the level of basketball played at the Junior level continues to rise.

This is a very competitive year with quality teams throughout the top 16. There are a number of very elite teams at the top of the standings as well.

This is in spite of the fact that some of our top players are heading south. There is still plenty of quality remaining here in the GTA.

I'm not sure if St. Mikes has plaed in any other tournaments aside from the Vaughan CLassic, maybe the Carr tournament, but it is not posted on the tournament results. But they are really living on two wins to stay in the top 10 aren't they? THey Beat Chaminade by 2 or 4 and then beat Brebeuf.... I think they are good team and have great coaches. SO this is no disrespect, just noticing there ranking and resent success/or lack of participation in big tournaments.... again, I do know they are a pretty good team, just asking.

    Anyone know how they're doing?

^ Agreed. And their win over Brebeuf doesn't mean a thing. Brebeuf's not that good, they got smacked around at the RIMROCKER. St. Mikes needs to play some better competition.

St Mikes beat chaminade, and d'youville and lost to downsview by 5 in the vaughan tournament and beat eastern commerce and MacNab and Pineridge while losing by 5 to vaughan in the henry car classic they should be ranked a lot higher they are certinatly capable of beating downsview and vaughan

Didn't know St.Mikes had that many results. Maybe they should be ranked then... However, most of there results you speak of, occured before the break. No action in some time then, (aside from the game against Notre Dame.) Which lots of teams have beaten unranked teams that have beaten ranked teams on occasions.
Unfortunately its a oneway street... It ranked you must beat ranked teams and/or have great games against ranked teams (which St. Mikes has thanks to your update). However, beating a team that is unranked who beat a ranked team doesn't help your climb. on the contrary, only loses to these teams affect your ranking.. ie. moving down.

I still believe St.Mikes is a top 6 team followed by Chaminade. Both teams aren't in a lot of tournaments but compete against ranked team. Not sure about St.Mikes but Chaminade is 9 -1 in league play. It's also for this reason I've decided to put Chaminade's games online. The top 16 should be in an end of season tournament after all teams complete their playoff schedule. Should the interest be there and all 16 teams are willing to commit after the final Coaches Poll, I'll commit to hosting the event. The game below was against Mc Guigan a team that would probably top 20.

Notre Dame (Ajax) should definitely be on the Super 16 poll. They recently beat #8 Dunbarton in LOSSA league play and lost 57-54 to #9 St. Mikes. They had an 18 point lead against St. Mikes but could not hold on. With recent results like that, I think they should be placed somewhere on the list or at the very least an honourable mention team.

Coach, keep posting your games. Very talented. How's your bench down the stretch, out of curiosity. No doubt a talented starting five. Cudos! On a side note McGuigan probably not a top 20 though.

I aslo want to note that D'Youville had a solid showing in this past weekend"s All Catholic Classic in Hamilton that showcased some solid teams throughout the province. They defeated both Father Goetz and St Mike's, only to lose in the final to Thomas More. The GTA has some solid teams and it is evident that after the Top 3 and 4 teams, on any given nite, its going to be competitive.

Hopefully in the future the panel can start incorporating teams from Hamilton in the GTA rankings. After all, Hamilton is the same distance from Toronto as Oshawa, and Oshawa teams seem to garner talk/consideration. I know that both St. Thomas More & MacNab would appreciate the honours.

Check the date. This poll was done a month ago, that is why last weekend’s tournament results haven’t been factored into the equation.
