Or, the man who, arguably, has had the most controversial impact on Toronto’s high school basketball landscape for almost two decades.
Curiously, so few mention his name. And when they do, it’s often in hushed tones, as if afraid to fully lift the lid on the story of Ro Russell, talent scout, basketball coach, and now the clear Toronto pipeline to the NBA.
The mercurial figure who grew up in the Jane and Finch neighbourhood is better known in the United States than in his hometown; the biggest names in U.S. college basketball circles probably follow him on Twitter. And while local coaches and school administrators fret over his influence, Christian Faith Center Academy in North Carolina hired him as coach of their basketball team to compete against the best in the U.S.
