    Highschool Scouting Empty Highschool Scouting

    Post by caddykid5 Fri Mar 13, 2009 10:14 pm

Is it true that elite highschool basketball programs have been scouting and trying to persuade possible players to come play at there school.
Elite Programs such as:Father Henry Carr, Pickering High, Mother Theresa, Eastern Commerce etc.

If this is true do you think this is good for the kids that are scouted that range from basically 12-14 years old.

i have no problem with just offering to them saying they would love for them to come to their school but i only would accept it with Grade 8s. Offering Grade 6s to come to your high school is thinking way too far along for the school as well as the kid. Mostly, I would enjoy for them to just build a team around what they get but some schools pride themselves on their basketball history and go that extra step that many schools are afraid to do.

scouting ppl to coem to high schools for peel is hard and coaches are not able to because peel follows boundary lines which prevent any random student to go to a school tht they prefer....soo most of their talent comes from local

Not good and definitely shouldn't be done because it ruins the whole system. You have a bunch of teams that are really good year after year and then you also have the losers.

In Peel you can go into whatever school you like from GR8 aslong as there is space in that school. Priority are the kids from there feeder schools. If it is a catholic school then they take there catholic feeder students then there public in boundary students, then anybody else.

Look at all the big programs who host middle school tournaments...all the while the are working the best kids to come to their school...we have Nike, all the tournies, US trip and the like...need to have a super league where these school compete against each other...not saying it isn't fair...but it is not a level playing field for the coach who works with the kids who come through his school's front door each year. I'm out!!! afro

In the Catholic high schools in Peel, you need a flex boundary. This means the principal at the school that you want to attend and the principal at the school where you're supposed to go both have to sign the document. Considering the fact that most Peel Catholic high school are at or beyond capacity (Pocock is a significant exception), these flex boundaries are not easy to get.

I played high school basketball in the mid 80's and recruiting was heavy back then. It was around before my time and will continue to be a part of the system & game for years to come. I don't feel that there is anything overly wrong with it, as long as kids are not being lied to or taken advantage of. There will always be some coaches/schools who are more victory motivated, and those people will put more time into developing a winning program than others will. Success usually breeds success, and the schools that are currently at the top of the heap have been there for a long time. Schools like Eastern, MT, Oakwood, Martingrove, West Hill, Cathedral, and others have been at the top for a long time. They have produced many prolific basketball players, and this tends to attract future generations of talent to those schools even without recruiting efforts.

That is what is supposed to happen. Often is does not. What happens now with students who bootleg their address just to attend a school? This happens alot in Peel. Xavier had a situation a couple years ago with a student named Kareem who played on the Senior basketball team for his 5th year. He lived in the Xavier boundaries but attended Loyola for his Gr9 - 12 years. Once Ryan Wright and Andrew Hall left and he felt the program was on a down year, he transfered to his home school Xavier who was suposed to be a favourtie in Peel (Loyola ended up winning Peel that year). He was declared ineligible for FX but how did he originally attend Loyola? No flex boundary document was ever signed by any principal.

Does the same rule apply to Public elementary school students who are choosing to attend a Catholic High School outside of their boundary? ex. Students who attended Edenwood Sr Public, who are suposed to attend Meadowvale choose to attend St. Joan of Arc (not too far), while Mount Carmel is the Catholic school in their boundary.

I know for a fact that this happened this year with a handful of students from Edenwood and Lisgar who chose to attend SJA instead of Carmel or Meadowvale. The parents of these kids when speaking to them briefly (a couple of my neighbors) said all they did was apply. No flex boundary document was needed.

When highschools have tournaments for elementary that is also for scouting right>?
Numerous highschool coaches on hooptown have been able to give a biography on players that are in grade 8!LOL
    And some deny it

Running Elementary tournaments, camps, house leagues, & rep teams are some of the ways that many smart, hard working, and successful high school programs aquire & develop their talent.

Wow! Those are some big time Martingrove names from the past. Patrick Jebbison & John Karpis were Metro AllStars back in their day when coach Dave West guided many Martingrove teams to Metro & Ontario Elite status. Good memory hoopluvr10!
