Standout players:
Stefan Nastic 6’10” C/PF (Thornhill) 2010 – Probably one of the most prominent recruits coming out of Canada this year, this Stanford University commit used his size against his obviously smaller opponents with an array of dunks in the game. He also displayed a soft shooting touch. He is working hard on his mid range game and ball handling. His strength still needs improvement but he has bulked up. The Pac-10 is full of bigs so Nastic still has a way to go. There is already sign of progress.
Kevin Pangos 6’1” PG (Denison) 2012- A fan favourite, he really displayed why he is one of the top point guards in the country. His court vision and poise is exceptional as he is very savvy, finding teammates anywhere on the floor. His shot was off on this night but he does have a good stroke and is very strong going to the basket. Defensively, he is smart, and with continued hard work and one or possibly two years ahead, Pangos will be any NCAA Division 1 school prize.
Daniel Mullings 6’1” G (Sir Wilfred Laurier) 2010- This is an electric guard; exciting to watch. Mullings is a play maker with an explosive game. He is a fierce competitor with a never-ending motor. Daniel has tight ball handling, a burst of speed and quickness to get to the rim at will. Despite his skinny frame, Mullings possesses a lot strength, body control and freakish leaping ability to finish strong around the basket or above the rim. One the most impressive things about Mullings is his intensity on the defensive end. He takes pride in shutting down opposing guards. He is also a very good rebounder at his size and position, using his outstanding jumping ability to soar over opponents, grab rebounds and take off for the fast break. It’s evident he’ll need work on his shooting, only attempting one three pointer and was reluctant to shoot even when left open. If Mullings can learn how to run the point full time and improve on his shooting game then he would be a scary player at this position. – 20 points, 7 Rebounds, 3 Assist
Aaron Redpath 6’3” SG (JClarke) 2011 – Redpath is a light-weight smooth shooting guard who can put points up without any hesitation. He has the shooting ability you look for in an off-gurad. Also, he can nail it from deep or from the midrange with an awkward release manner (above his head) which makes it difficult for defenders. The biggest weakness to his game would be ball handling; he picks up the ball and puts himself in a dangerous position when the slightest bit pressure is applied.
Hassan Abdullahi 6’2” G (Pope John Paul II) 2012- Abdullahi has made a name for himself over the course of the season. Being the leading scorer on his Pope John Paul team, he lead the way in scoring as well in this game, chipping in 23 points and 8 rebounds. He showed how effective he can be from behind the arc as he looked a bit more confident knocking down three balls. Abdullahi is an interesting player with great length and the tools to be very good. It’s just the matter of him putting in the extra work to elevate his game to another level. He needs to improve his overall athleticism; he is more of a set shooter at the moment. He has to improve shooting in the movement. He has solid handles but could still use some work as he tends to stumble when the defense applies pressure, especially going left.
Anthony Ottley 6’6” SF (Emery) 2010- One of the most versatile scorers in the event, we’ve seen a lot from him in the past two weeks. He is strong, has length, and is athletic. He can create scoring opportunities down low, midrange and outside. Ottley is very quick off his feet, evident in how he can snatch a rebound and go all the way to the other end for an easy lay-up- or throw it down with his sneaky leaping ability. In this night, Ottley did not shoot from behind the arc as well as he did the previous week at the March Madness Showcase. 14 points 8 rebounds
Andrew Howell-Stephenson 6’3”G (Brampton Centennial) 2011 – The one aspect that stands out most in Stephenson’s improved overall game would be the decision-making. He always possessed the athleticism but now it seems he’s worked hard to increase his skill set. Even though he did not shoot the ball well, Stephenson has a good looking jumper. A little more practice should do a lot more for his consistency. He can handle the ball and use his athletics to get to the rack. Stephenson had the highlight of the day, showcasing his leaping ability with an impressive windmill jam.
Darnell Landon 6’2” G (Woodbridge) 2010-This off guard maybe undersized, but he really showed he is not afraid to drive to the basket and also shot the ball. A streaky shooter with decent 3pt range was one of the surprises in this game. Although undersized for his position, he is quick with long arms which he uses well in attacking the basket.
Dinjyl Walker 6’2 CG (Vaughan) 2012- Walker is a similar player to Landon with the exception that he is stronger and more athletic. He had some glowing moments in the game, and showed why he is an All-Star. He is very explosive to the basket and is not shy to shoot. He definitely is one of the stronger players coming out of the York Region, evident in his overall display this year. Working on his handle will be key, because he has the ability to take it to the next level.
Jahmal Jones 6’0” PG (Mississauga Secondary) 2010- Jones was very impressive in the open court as he looked to advance the ball ahead to create scoring opportunities before the defense regroups. A pass-first point guard who gets his teammates involved. Jones displayed excellent ball handles and the quickness to get the rim. When in the paint, he’ll drop it off to an open man or attract the contact. Despite his skill set, he must add strength to be able to handle a bump while on the ball and to take contact around the basket. – 14 points 6assist 1 turnover
Jordan Catrell 5’10” PG (Holy Trinity) 2011- He is very quick. His speed and ability to get to the basket was impressive. He scores and handles his defenders with ease. Cattrell actually shot the ball well in this game and wasn’t out of control. He displayed some court vision at times and defended well. His All-Star performance shows us all that the little man can play big too!
Matt Blaha 6’3” G (St Thomas Aquinas) 2010- Here is a sharp shooter, who has range behind the arc. He was not shy when it came to putting up shots and his numbers in the game (the 22 points speaks for itself). He moves well without the ball to get open, but does need to work on his handle. Alongside Cattrell, he was probably the most impressive All-Star for the Halton Region. His speed and strength need improvement, but he can really knock it down.
Chris McLaughlin 6′8” C (Abbey Park) 2010- He is a big body, probably the only one to help in the paint against the 6′10 Nastic. He is aggressive and strong, but obviously needs a lot of work. He rebounds well, and uses his body on both ends of the floor. The fact that he has size and strength will make any college or university coach happy. However, he still needs to polish his game.
Brikram Gill 6’7” F (Ascencion) 2011 – One the best players in the event, Gill is a good athlete who can do a bit of everything: handle, shoot the three, and contribute on both ends of the boards with his active hands and movement. – 18 points 10 rebounds 2 steals
Mussa Noble-Mohamed 6’3”SG (Jarvis) 2010 – Noble–Mohamed proved in the event that he is one of the best shooters around. He displayed a nice smooth looking stroke and was consistent knocking down shots anywhere on the floor. He is able to shoot it off the bounce or off screens. Noble-Mohamed was definitely one of the most complete shooters in the event. 15 points 4 assist 2 rebounds
Kavon Parchment 6’1 G (West Hill) 2011 – Parchment is a slim guard with length. Even though he is thin, Parchment is an aggressive player who does not shy away from any contact. He will attack the hole strong and finish around the basket, or create an opportunity to get to the free throw line. On the defensive end, Parchment’s length and lateral quickness is good enough to prevent opposing guards from easy penetration. He should look to add on size and improve shooting off the bounce. – 16 points 2 rebounds 3 steals
Manny Sahota 6’6” SF (D’youville) 2010- There is nothing new you can say about Sahota that we have not mentioned in the past. The Cornell commit looked good as he has been all season. The only thing we wanted to see more of was the rebounding. – 14 points 4 rebounds
Chris Anderson 6’4”W (Mt Carmel) 2010- Anderson is solid wing with size. He showed he can handle, hit a pull up jumper in the midrange area, and is not afraid of contact down low. Anderson brings energy and good understanding to the game. - 17 points 5 rebounds 3stls
Brandon Bos 6’1” PG (Markham) 2010- Brandon has had a strong season. In this game he only showed his abilities in spurts. He is another streaky shooter with some handles. This wasn’t his best performance but the potential is obvious.
Paul Williams 6’8” C (Brampton Centennial) 2010 – The big man has a huge frame. He did not show any post moves as he mainly scored his buckets off clean ups. Williams was active on both end of boards snatching five offensive boards and 13 overall. Williams is still a work in progress. He has a decent touch around the basket. He will be a solid pick up for a Canadian program.
Adika Peter- McNeilly 6’1”G (Mother Teresa) 2011 – This young guard was productive early, putting up points. Peter-McNeily knocked down some midranges and attacked the hoop. He went silent in the second half but definitely caught our eyes as a player to keep tabs on.
Tyrone Ariri 6’1”G (Eastern Commerce) 2010 – This is a quick guard with a scorer’s mentality. Ariri is undersize at the off-guard position but is aggressive scoring-wise. He is always on the attack and has a variety of offensive moves to keep the defense off balance.
Isiah Swaby 6’5” F (Pineridge) 2010 – This forward is well-built and uses his size to attack the rim. He frequently drew the contact but never shot too well at the free throw line. It would’ve been nice to see him use his size to affect other areas in the game noticeably on the boards and on the defensive end.
