The Thomas Report - 2010 All Canadian & Ontario High School Teams
Written by Jim Thomas on Wednesday, 07 April 2010

Congratulation to Julian Clarke 6'3" from Oakwood High School for being named TheHoop-La.com's 2010 High School Player of the Year. Clarke led his team to a Quad "A" OFSAA championship this past March. The Oakwood Barons were ousted by Eastern Commerce in their city championshp game but were given a back-door entry to the OFSAA tournament. The 6th-ranked Barons went on to win five games in 76 hours which included making OFSAA history by defeating the top three seeded teams - Pickering, Mother Teresa and JC Richardson to reach the final, a feat never done before - with Clarke leading the way. In the final against St. Thomas More of Hamilton, Clarke took the game over in the fourth quarter connecting on 5 consecutive three pointers to lead his team to a 47-34 gold medal victory. Congratulations once again to Julian Clarke for a remarkable and memorable season.

I just lost all respect for Jim Thomas. Has he seen Nastic play? NO WAY he is 1st team ALL CANADIAN. Dont agree with Ottley as a 1st team all Canadian either.

and 6 Ontario teams? thats ridiculous. and Matthew Wright is on the 2nd team all Canadian but cant quite make any of the 6 Ontario teams! Nastic is on both?

Cam on the 4th team???? Mullings on the 6th team??? wow

Are you guys serious? Am I asking you to feel sorry for me? I am making a statement about an obvious bias. How is it possible for a team that was highly ranked all season long not have a player on ANY of the Ontario teams?

If I am not mistaken, this is high school basketball. Whatever your beef is, we have wonderful student-athletes in our program. Maybe if you could put aside your pettiness, you might think about those kids that have been slighted.

Maybe YOU just don't get it. This is about players not coaches. "I" don't feel "I" was slighted. I feel that players were slighted. Certainly a player like Raheem Isaac, who was MVP in 3 tournaments and an All Star in another and a 75% student, is worthy of some recognition.

honestly i dont think he is better than any of the guards on the 6th team and i know all 4 players and their game well maybe u could argue he is better than another guard higher on the list ? im sure there are mistakes and overlooked guys, i dont know every player on the list (all the other guards) so i couldnt say for sure if he should make it

Melnik, quit whinning and being so arrogant. That's what people dislike about you and your "program". Show a little humility and stop trying to steal the shine from other kids so that you can cast it on your own.

Just a suttle interjection my hooptown peeps...there are kids involved in this, players that are passionate about this game, and come on here to see what's happening in their basketball communities. Let's just recognize that as the key, and main reason why this site is so popular! Yes it is a forum to express, and the freedom of speech mandate does exist, but, Coach Melnik, does COACH a good number of KIDS whether we agree or disagree and that deserves some level of respect. The FHC program has been a strong one and he is a part of that, just as much as the kids. No doubt in my mind that FHC players deserve to be somewhere in the mix...just my opinion. Jim Thomas, sorry but, you dropped the ball on this one.

okay "know the game" ...... then maybe you can tell me which player raheem isaac is better, as that seems to be Melnik's best argument.......i do not believe that he is better than bos, mullings, or presutti and they are on the last team so maybe he just isnt qualified, plus i think hes a transfer anyways

I just think the list is a bit shakey overall. No, Matthew Wright, no Troy Joseph, no Duane Notice, Mullings on the 6th team, not one FHC player, not one MT player, not one Pickering player??? I don't know...just seems strange. For these teams to be at the top of the list ever year, all year long, it just seems a bit...questionable? No?

And though you may disagree with Coach Melnik's assessment that his guy(s) should be on the team, no reason to disrespect a coach like that...

knowthegame made some good points about guys who were left off, but you could always argue for one or two guys...i thought jim did a great job in making the list...i think leaving matthew off was an oversight...

I continue to be amazed at the level of ignorance of some adults that express their opinions on this site. By insulting me you only show your true colours, however you do it behind a screen name. I frankly do not care who likes me or who wants to accuse me of whining or being arrogant. I do care about honest and impartial rankings/assessments. Raheem Isaac, Jahmal Grennan and Shane Reader were all ranked by Barry Hayes on his lists. They all had tremendous senior seasons, and Raheem who is not a transfer, could return for a 5th.

Why people continue to hold unfounded grudges is beyond me. I will never stop advocating for my players when I think they are deserving and I expect nothing less from any other coach.

Raheem has been at FHC since gr 9, get your facts straight. I would think that a guys whos been in the Ontario team since even before all the guys went to prep could make at least one of the six teams, or maybe im just a fool.

I just wanted to add my two cents in. I know some people don't like this list because it doesn't consist of certain GTA players, but, not every toronto guy can make an All Ontario Team or All Canada Team. Some of the these non-GTA players are great players that are not household names in the Toronto area, but are accomplished, talented and worthy of their placement on these teams. For example, a player like Jordan Gauthier at Windsor(Herman) is a virtual unknown here because he plays 4 hours away from the GTA, but, is a really good two guard... a great scorer. I've seen him play a few times and he definitely deserves some recognition. Stefan C. is a 6ft-5 point guard from Bluevale(Kitchener). He is another great non GTA player that is not a household name, but, is a hot prospect for many CIS schools. My point is that it can't be a Toronto-centric team, if it is an All Ontario or All Canada team.

As for the comment about Stefan Nastic, these teams are also by position. So he might not be a top player in terms of skill and talent overall, but, at the center position he is considered one of the best in Canada and Ontario. However, I heard the kid Chris from Abbey Park is really good. Maybe Chris should be first team, but, he did not sign to Stanford. Personally, I think that the list is good. As I run through the names, I see nothing but good players that you can make a legit argument for their selection. Some people are surprised by Daniel Mullings selection on the Sixth Ontario team. However, that is accurate as well. He's a fantastic player that somehow slips under everyone's radar. I can't believe that he's not generating a lot of buzz from college coaches.
