    Exhibition Game Empty Exhibition Game

Post by Kipling Coach Tue May 04, 2010 1:36 pm

    Hello,
For the past few years I have been noticing a trend which I was not happy with. Many of my basketball players lost the motivation in second semester (once the season was over) to stay academically focused. This year I am hoping to give them more incentive by running occasional scrimmages and practices. I would like to give them an exhibition game as extra incentive so if there are any teams still going that would be interested feel free to give me an email.
    Thanks,
    Mike Krochmalnek

i think this goes against most board rules, unless you are to run it as a rep practice...keep you nose clean coach

how is this breaking rules? football teams do this every year, they practise for 2-3 solid weeks and play at least one game

I do not know of any board rules that forbid this. The only issue would be schools that have a one sport per season policy but even that would be subject to the decision of an individual athletic department or administration.

This could qualify as "out-of-season competition" and requires association executive approval in some districts. I may be naive but I don't see why an association would prevent this if they were notified ahead of time.

From reading the TDSSAA Constitution there is nothing in there with regards to out of season play. There is one form to fill out but that is more with regards to participating in tournaments. I think the big issue is with regards to using school funds and travelling with the team. I am not running a school team right now. I am running a basketball club for students to stay active and work on skills and keep them motivated to stay in school and go to class. It is like any other school club, athletically based or not. There are some students from the team and there are some students who will not play on the team in the fall but love basketball. There were many of my players who are graduating or will be too old that wanted to participate but they did not go to class so they got kicked out of the club. An exhibition game would be for the students who have earned the reward by going to class and saying out of trouble, it would be like a field trip for other clubs.
    Thanks,
    Mike
