Congrats to Loyola, but the whole concept of a discriminatory tournament in today's society of equal funding seems off and unneccessary to me. How would they feel about an all public tournament featuring schools like Vaughan, JCR, Anderson, Oakwood, Eastern, etc.

I know why this tournament first started, but do the catholics still feel that they can't compete with the best?

If you are an adult and going in this direction then you are an dumbaxx if you are a student then you are an idiot. Because it is an all catholic people like you have to put a meaning to it.There are tournaments that are called invitations how come you dont see something wrong with that.
Why is everything these days have to mean something.

Sticks & stones "gunta", thanks for keeping it classy.

I have no problem with invitational only tournaments, most of them are. But when you label it All-Catholic and exclude the publics, you're going to get a rise out of people.

are you really going to argue about that there is ONE all-catholic tournament?

there are sooo many tournaments out there, it's not like public schools can't go to any other tournament (sooo many of them)

if your going to argue about an all catholic tournament, then argue about how some leagues are split into public and catholic.

I know that there was an attempt to start an all public tournament last year but it fell through because many of the top public teams in the province could not agree on a date. There are so many tournaments that teams attend regularly that it was almost impossible. Perhaps just picking a date and taking the best teams that can make it is the way to start??

Personally, I don't have any problem with an all Catholic tournament, but I can definitely see why some might. We have become a society that allows people to invite others to events (like invitational tournaments) but we definitely do not tolerate excluding people because of the religious beliefs and other forms of what might be called discrimination. I am not saying I see this tournament like that, but some might. I see this tournament as maintaining a tradition and using basketball to unite schools from a similar background. We do not fault associations like the Maccabiah Games etc. so perhaps we should keep this in perspective as well.

Sorry to say i do not keep certain things classy.
Ontario open it borders to every creed and race people from all walks of life. The problem we are having is when you come to this country and want to change things to suit your own needs.

If you look back you will see this tournaments have been running since 1976 why the complain now.ontario have reach to the point where i cant say merry christmas to people you have to say happy holidays.

Stop taking everything and making it into a problem.
before jumping to your own conclusions how about finding out why they call it all catholics, just for your info these tournaments are well run.

My response is not really for a basketball forum but sometimes you have to draw the line and say stop the b/s .

I agree ith Gunta on this one. I went to a 'catholic school' from kindergarten to the end of high school. From experience I can tell that most of the people at the schools aren't even catholic. This is an All-Catholic tournament because it is a tradition. Nobody is being narrow minded, and nobody is afraid of competition. I played in the tournament once. There are no prayers before games, theres no cross sitting on the side of the court. Its just a regular tournament. How is it any different than a tournament that only invites top teams? I could just as easily make the argument that its not right to discrimnate aginst the teams who are less skilled, but that would just be ridiculous. If the public schools don't like the idea so much then what they can do is start their own tradition, which they tried to do and were unsuccessful. And if you want to play in the tournament so bad then just go to a catholic school!

NEVAQUITNEVALOSE, to answer your question of "How is it any different than a tournament that only invites top teams?" - it only invites Catholic School teams, and as others have pointed out, that will bother some people.

How was the final game? Any comments?

Hats off for Loyola beating a very tough/disciplined Sacred Heart team from Ottawa. If you recall Sacred Heart almost gave Vaughan their first loss of the season at the Holday classic (if it wasn't for troy hitting 3 three's in the final minute, I believe)

Looks like Loyola must be playing some good ball at the moment. Is there point guard going any where next year? undecided?

TU20 I see that inviting only Catholic School teams will bother some people, but the same point can be argued for many things. Lets hypothetically say there was an "All Toronto" tournament (I say hypothetically because to the best of my knowledge there is no such tournament). Would anyone complain that the tournament discriminates against Peel, Durham, or York region? I am almost 100% sure that nobody would care. My point is that any argument that can be made about the "All Catholic" tournament can be said about my hypothetical "All Toronto" tournament.

    NEVAQUITNEVALOSE,

In Catholic schools especially Elementry you must be Catholic to attend because of the Sacraments but one you reach high school all bets are off that's why it is a perfect playground for recruitment of public school players entering grade 9. You all have seen the many posts of peel people and their issue of players going to the Catholic system in Toronto.
The school boards have been separate for years and the tourny is just tradition, I don't think all those years ago when rules were different they invisioned the kind of system that has evolved or school board jumping to play ball would ever take place.
I think before harsh judgements are made we must remember that this thing has been around alot longer than some of the people on this forum.

NEVAQUITNEVALOSE, your example is a poor one. Tournaments based upon geographics are reasonable, however, tournaments based upon religious persuation can be controversial.

Wasn't there a "Durham Regional Catholic Invitational" earlier this season? Why no backlash back then? I am guessing, based on the teams that played, that everyone there was / had to be a catholic school, so isn't that tournament the same thing?
I see no problem with the concept. i think some people are just getting hung up on the name of the tournament. Check out how many Invitational Tournaments have only Public schools in them. Do they exist? Was there a problem?

Catholics schools have every right to have their own tournament. Publics schools the same. I undertsand that Religion is a touchy issue but to me bringing up an issue of All Catholic basketball tournament is in the same wave as asking why are there Catholic Highschools period. Why are there seperate school boards? I that how you all feel? That their should only be public highschools? Is your issue with an All Catholic tournament bigger than basketball?

I believe there is also a franco-ontarian tourney. Personally, I can see why people question these tourneys but in the large scheme of things it is not a big deal.
