For the Mississauga Lions, the third time was the charm.
Led by Schanuj Sivapunnivam's 15 points, the bantam Lions avenged their only two losses on the season by thrashing Brampton's Fletcher's Meadow Arrows 55-30 to capture a Peel high school basketball championship last night at Sheridan College in Brampton.
The Arrows had defeated the Lions 57-41 and 56-53 in their two regular season meetings.
"We had payback on our minds today," said Lions head coach Sakis Rizos. "The kids worked extremely hard in practice the last week. We had a great semi-final on Monday and it carried through to tonight."
The Lions jumped out to a 32-17 lead at the half and never looked back. The Arrows couldn't penetrate the Lions stingy man-to-man defence and as a result, the Lions capitalized in the transition game resulting from Arrows turnovers.
"We got intimidated by (Fletchers Meadow) the first time and the second time we played them we had a bad first quarter," Rizos added. "But we watched the tape, we prepared and the kids followed through on the game plan here tonight."
The Lions handily defeated the Applewood Axemen 72-47 in semi-final action.
