This is why none of the top players play OBA anymore. These coaches are corrupt. Have an impartial group do the rankings for each age group. Hopefully some teams will appeal their rankings, but in reality its better for a team to be ranked high in D2 rather that getting blown out in D1, so keep Etobicoke Elite in D1 and let them get smacked by Ballers and Whitby or MUMBA

The OBA never ceases to amaze me with their incompetence. I know it’s not an exact science in ranking and seeding teams but they (OBA) need to stop with the crap. You have for the most part members of the seeding and ranking committee that is bias against certain organizations, teams and coaches. Some of the members are on the committee to ensure that their organization, team or coaching/ref buddy gets looked after.

They did the same thing to St. David’s and Mississauga Monarchs last year, they ranked them both 6th and 7th respectively and they both ended up playing in the Provincial final. I know things happen but clearly they were way off on that one.

This year is even more of a joke than last year.

What were you guys drinking Empty Consistency

Post by ballercoach Wed May 16, 2012 1:31 pm

Hello may name is Coach Fred, Head Coach of the Ballers U19 Jr. Boys team. It’s quite ironic that I have decided to post my views on this topic since my team has been granted the Div 1 1st place seed in the OBA U19 Jr. ranking and seeding. But I hope that I can help to shed some light on this topic. It’s nice to see that the OBA U19 Jr. age group is generating some good discussions but hopefully with some insight we can objectively look at the ranking and seeding selection process. I would agree that in the past the OBA ranking and seeding selection process has been, at times, inaccurate. But due to numerous discussions, emails and on-line post the OBA has recognized the issues and continues to develop and implement different strategies and systems that will eventually help them to come up with the best possible working formula.

But despite how much human intervention and computer software is used the bottom line is Consistency. How consistent are some of these team at winning basketball games? I have had the opportunity to watch several U19 tournaments this season and had discussions with many U19 Jr. Coaches as well as the many University and College Coaches scouting the tournaments and exhibition games. The consensus among the Coaches is that all of the U19 teams are inconsistent at winning basketball games. A team for instance will beat a top U19 team today and the loose to a middle of the pack U19 team tomorrow. Also, another factor is winning tournaments and games in early March and early April and then loosing games in late April and May heading into the OBA Provincial Cup. This posses an issue because teams take time to come together, if team "A" beats team "B" at he beginning of the season and then losses to team "B" towards the end of the season then which game carries more weight in the final ranking and seeding?

The bottom line is if you want to be at the top then teams must consistently win basketball games and tournaments. One of the most important factors is the players themselves, players must also be held accountable for their team’s inconsistencies and successes. A team’s ability to win basketball games largely depend on the players on the team, the more they practice and play together helps to develop their individual skills and team chemistry which then results in winning basketball games.

How ever, by talking to many U19 Jr. Coaches it is quite apparent that many of the U19 players, for what ever reasons, miss a number of practices and games making their teams unstable. Injuries and long high school seasons are resulting in over worked players, players not taking it seriously, players off playing on different AAU teams and missing OBA games, there are a number of reasons and outside influences that ultimately influence a team’s success and play a huge part in how teams are ranked and seeded. Yes the OBA is not perfect but there are many, many other factors involved; to be seeded correctly teams must consistently win basketball games no if’s, and’s or but’s about it.

What were you guys drinking Empty Some teams deserved their ranking, others not

Post by hoopslover Thu May 31, 2012 6:39 pm

The U-19 division had some pretty cool competition. The top 4 division 1 teams all belonged, playing good ball, along with London. With provincials, everything's gotta come together just right to win. MUMBA won it all, even after losing by 18 to Ballers in pool play. And Baller deserved their ranking, even tho they lost to Blessed-Nation in the semis and ended up with bronze. And blessed ended up #2 - right where they were ranked to begin with. So, looks pretty good.

D2 was not so clean. That's where having a coach on the ranking comittee might have hurt the process some. Etob #1 was a better team than that "elite" team. The #1 team had better coaching, while no question YAAACE and IEM should have been ranked higher. Etob#1 losing in triple OT to the champs from IEM had to be the game of the tournament, but then the gold game went into OT too between IEM and Blessed-Gunter. Great job to all these teams, includin bronze medal YAAACE squad. Just a lot of really good ball from the U19 squads, and most deserved being in the top 2 divisions.
