Grassroots adds to its roster.[/b][/size]
After just coming off their most successful season in 16 years culminating with the first-ever Canadian program to win the highly prestigious Adidas Super 64 national tournament in Las Vegas, Grassroots is very happy to announce the arrival of Coach Wells Davis. Wells Davis has decided to partner with Ro Russell to form the new Grassroots Canada. Wells Davis brings 16 years of coaching experience. Most recently he has successfully guided the Mississauga Monarchs to 3 out of the last 4 OBA provincial championships. After much exploration and deliberation he decided to forego all the highly recommended organizations and join forces with Coach Ro Russell and his Grassroots Canada Elite organization.
Wells decided he wanted to move to a situation that was more focused on developing and exposing elite student athletes that see basketball as a vehicle to higher education and even a professional basketball career. Coach Ro has been a pioneer in getting young athletes the opportunity to play in the US over the last 16 yrs.
The following quote from Marquette head coach Buzz Williams was among many good things Wells heard about “Coach Ro,” as he normally called:
“Ro Russell specifically has done an unbelievable job in elevating basketball in Canada,” Williams said. “All of the best players in Canada play for Ro and his relationships with coaches in the United States have been beneficial in regards to helping those kids.”
It was the idea of elevating the level of basketball in Canada and also the opportunity to elevate the Grassroots program that made the new alliance desirable. Even though Coach Ro and his program have been the subject of some rumours and innuendos, for every rumour there are dozens of true positive stories of kids who have benefited greatly from being part of Grassroots. Instead of being guided by rumours Coach Wells decided to sit down and get to know Coach Ro. After several meeting coach Wells was convinced Coach Ro’s experience, contacts and humility were every impressive. Mr. Davis aims to bring more structure and corporate partnerships to the organization, which will tremendously help to facilitate the many programs at Grassroots. Currently, the new Grassroots Canada is currently in negotiations with several corporate partners who also respect what Ro Russell has started and more importantly in the program direction now that Wells Davis is on board.
In the end these two powerhouses (Wells Davis - OBA, Ro Russell - AAU) have come together to form one of the largest and most successful organizations in North America.
