The 3rd Annual Gary Durrant Slam Dunk Career & Mentorship Fair and North vs. South All-Star game pitting York Region All-Stars vs. Toronto All-Stars was a huge success. The All-Star game featured such players as Henry Tan and Zack Marcelline as well as Aaron Best.Gary Durrant is a very successful York Region School Board member who oversees the students of African Canadian descent. He played basketball at Florida International University, then went on to play pro ball in Europe. He then came back to Canada to give back to the community by mentoring youth and teaching them the fundamentals of basketball as well as being an excellent role model for the youth to look up to. He also runs camps that also serve to improve the skills of his students.
The full-day event took place at Milliken Mills High School in Markham, Ontario and consisted of various seminars for students including taking SAT's, Entrepreneurism, Life Planning, Scholarships and Post-Secondary program mapping. Various members of the community took part including Canadian Idol stalwart Farley Flex, York Region Police Constable Patrick A. Brown, Anton Skerritt, and a lot more. After the educational and life skills component was done an All-Star Game dubbed North vs. South pitted the York Region All-Stars vs. Toronto All-Stars.
