Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
They've been down the past few seasons, however, they have a good team this year. Vaughn Road has a good young core and some transfer students as well. Coach Hall knows what he's doing!

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
A lot of people have vaughan at 1 (they should be there until beaten)..... I think they are very beatable this year especially because they lost there 2 biggest/tallest players. It will hurt them on the boards.
I like you list therealisontherise. too bad 2 of them are in the same pool at the early bird (the death group) lol .

Campion got beat by Notre Dame (Burlington) 62-77.There are 3 big teams in brampton that are staying low dont count them out .Holy Trinity (Oakville) is good this year and Carmel would be playing them this week a test with no excuse game.

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
Carmel will still be without Starter Tyrell and rotation player Paul until the end of November.
Im not sure but dont Nolan and Trevon play football? Will they even be able to play? Holy Trinity usually has a good fottball team dont they which goes far into the season.
Im assuming DY, BCSS are 2 of the 3 Brampton teams you are talking about.

Holt Trinity plays a quarter-final this coming Friday. They should win that and advance to the semi-finals the week after.

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
Loyola: who do they have outside Boney and Babic? Not much to support Loyola at #6, much less top 10.
Holy Trinity: Didn't they lose 3-4 guys who started last year? What makes them good/any better than last year?
Mount Carmel: Do they return everyone?
Pickering: Who do they have now?

I'm not inclined to read too much into comparing A, B, and C based on how they all performed against D. That kind of comparison repeatedly breaks down under the different circumstances in each game.

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
Heard Grant Mullins went to Notre Dame?
Is he also playing for Reda still? Not even sure how that would work Halton is really strict ..
If this is true, Notre Dame will be back on top of Halton. Loyola doesn't have enough of a team to lift them past the Notre Dame of last year + Mullins.

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
Programs like REDA and the like are not classified as high school or post-secondary programs by OFSAA so a player can theoretically compete for one while competing for a high school team. For the time being, they are treated no differently than club programs.

Nope, not in Halton
Xavier Rimrocker wrote:they are treated no differently than club programs.
Exactly, and afaik in Halton you can't play club or any outside organized ball during the high school season, period. Rep players sometimes get away with playing under the radar scrimmages (ie not employing refs on the books or keeping score), but certainly not in full scale tournaments anywhere, ever. Don't even think they can go to the US without approval from the board. Otherwise, there would be a school called White Oaks that would be killing Halton
Not to mention that any transfer in, even from an elite academy program, is (supposedly) treated the same as a transfer from one school to another.

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
Grant Mullings is one of the top players in Ontario. He is not playing for REDA this year, and is back at Notre Dame. Along with him, Josh Bell left phase1 and is back at Carr. Which makes you ask if those programs are that good, why would these kids leave?
I strongly think that the high school system should get together and not allow kids to participate in rep games during the high school season. The system is getting overwhelmed by numerous programs.
You got high school, OBA, prep teams and AAU programs doing whatever they want.
Even high schools shouldn't be allowed to start practicing until a certain day. Kids are getting pulled from numerous sides.
Ive said this before but timelines for these programs and restrictions should be placed and enforced by the Ontario Basketball. BUT OFSAA and Ontario BAsketball don't seem to want to work together to promote the sport.

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
tart11 in other words basically you are saying all boards should follow (and am not sure if they do or dont) the rules Halton basically already does.
Fwiw there aren't players in Halton playing for school and club really. If each board enforces this rule, then it will never be an issue because you have to make it out of your board to get to OFSAA..
edit: Notre Dame owns Halton this year.

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
I had a look at the HSSAA Constitution and it is a revelation. It's the first one I've seen with specific eligibility guidelines for each sport. I would be interested to see why some sports allow full club competition during the high school season (e.g. wrestling); others allow partial club competition at the house league level (e.g. basketball) and others allow none whatsoever during the high school season (e.g. rugby).

Re: 2011-2012 Contenders
I am saying that someone needs to take leadership and say there are TOO MANY programs going on at once, no guidelines, no look at how each program is developing kids.
You have students jumping around from rep team to rep team, high school to prep, playing on numerous teams, being coached by whoever wants to start a team and a program.
I can easily start a team and called THE JUNIOR CANADIAN BASKETBALL ACADEMY. Attract students asnd start coaching them, pulling them from schools and other clubs. The system is overwhelmed and its not helping the development of athletes.
Like I said before why not have guidelines
High school: Can start practices in November, not earlier. States in the USA do this. High school season goes from November to February.
OBA: End of February to Start of May
AAU: End of April to August
Canadian prep teams: have them organized and certified. Right now anyone can start one of these teams and call them a prep team. Attracting athletes looking to make it big. Pulling athletes from their high school teams. If the rules stated that kids on these prep teams cannot play high school bsketball then at lease everyone can follow the same rules. right now you got kids playing on 2 even 3 different teams. That's alot of games and practice, no structure, no discipline as kids choose what programs they want to do depending on which coach tells them what they want to hear.
Am saying their is no leadership and no direction.
