Canada’s top ranked teams #1Henry Carr and #2Eastern Commerce to open season at the Ryerson Hoops Festival
The 2012 TDCAA Champion Henry Carr Crusaders open the 2012-13 season as the pre-season #1 ranked team in Canada. The opener features another epic battle versus arch rival and #2 ranked team in Canada, The Eastern Commerce Saints. Eastern was the 2012 TDSB Champions and Silver medalist at the AAAA OFSAA Championship.
This pre-season battle will be held on Saturday, October 20th at 5pm in Ryerson's new Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens arena which has a capacity of 3,000 for basketball and will be the lead in game for the 7pm Wake Forest Demon Deacons (NCAA D1, ACC) vs Ryerson Rams game (CIS, OUA East ).
The Henry Carr Crusaders have been one of the dominant programs in the TDCAA and Ontario since Head Coach Paul Melnik took over the program nearly a decade ago. The Crusaders have captured multiple TDCAA Championships while playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules on a yearly basis that includes elite competition in the U.S.A. The Crusaders will once again boast one of the most talented rosters in high school basketball and will immediately be bolstered with the addition 7'2 C Tanveer Bhullar. Bhullar returns home from Huntington Prep in West Virginia where he was a teammate of global phenom Andrew Wiggins. Bhullar is coming of a stellar summer where he represented Canada at the U17 World Championship.
The Eastern Commerce Saints have been the Rolls Royce of Canadian high school basketball for many years now and arguably the most successful high school basketball program in Canadian history, winning countless Toronto titles and an unprecedented seven Ontario Championships. Ultra successful Eastern Commerce Head Coach Kevin Jeffers will once again have a roster that can win it all, led by "the next" 6'8 grade 10 combo guard Justin Jackson who has already caught the eyes of NBA Scouts and NBA Recruiting sites such as NBA DraftExpress and NBADraftnet. Jackson was also very impressive as the youngest player at the 2012 World Championships where he turned heads as one of Canada U17's top players. Jackson also returned home this week after being Named MVP of the NBA’s Americas Team Camp in Puerto Rico.
NCAA Power Wake Forest tips off Pre-Season with the Ryerson Rams in Toronto at Ryerson Hoops Festival.
In the finale of the Ryerson Hoops Festival, the Wake Forest Deamon Decons will tip off at 7pm against the Ryerson Rams. Coach Jeff Bzdelik enters the third season of his rebuild at Wake Forest after spending 17 seasons in the NBA and most recently as the head coach of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. Wake Forest is on the rise with a the top recruiting class this year and the return of the team’s top two scorers from last season - ‘6’7 Jr Forward Travis Mckie (16.1ppg) and 6’3 Sr Guard Spencer Harris( 16.7ppg). The Demon Deacons are a team to watch in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and expect to challenge for a post-season berth against the likes of North Carolina and Duke in college basketball’s toughest conference.

The Ryerson Rams are led by former Eastern Commerce Head Coach Roy Rana. Entering his fourth season, Rana and the Rams are coming off the most successful season in school history where a magical second half run propelled them to the CIS Final 8 National Championships and their first-ever win at Nationals. The Rams return the core of the National Championship qualifying team, losing just one Sr but adding needed depth. The Rams return OUA First Team All Star 6’1 PG Jahmal Jones(Mississauga, Ont.) who all represented Canada at the 2011 World University Games and Pan American Games. Joining him in leading the Rams is Second Team OUA All Star 6’4 G Jordan Gauthier (Windsor, Ontario) and OUA All-Rookie Team Selection and Former Eastern Commerce Saint star 6’4 guard Aaron Best. The Rams are striving for consistency in the tough OUA Conference, arguably the deepest in the country. The early test against one of the NCAA’s traditional powers will be a great test and preparation game for their first season in their new home, The Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens.
