OTTAWA ALL-STARS TO PARTICIPATE IN PRESTIGIOUS BATTLE OF THE BOARDS IN TORONTO

Top Ten National-Capital Hoopsters compete for respect and high school court supremacy

OTTAWA, ON – March 27, 2014 - Ottawa’s premier high school boys basketball players will be converging onto Toronto for the 5th Annual Battle of the Boards hosted by Ryerson University. This prestigious event will once again showcase 96 of the best players from across the province on Wednesday, April 16th. Last year in their inaugural appearance, the Ottawa HS All-Star team downed the Peel All-Stars 70-69 in a closely fought contest. The event taking place out of the Mattamy Athletic Centre features four games between eight all-star teams from across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and other top regions of Ontario. The schedule was recently announced:

    3:00PM OTTAWA vs TORONTO PUBLIC
    4:30PM KITCHENER-WATERLOO vs YORK
    6:00PM TORONTO CATHOLIC vs DURHAM
    7:30PM PEEL vs HAMILTON

Tony House (Sacred Heart) and Matt Koeslag (St. Patrick) will once again patrol the sidelines and coach the Ottawa team which consists of: Yasiin Joseph (Glebe), Sean Dodds (Hillcrest), Eddie Ekiyor (Mother Teresa), Brendan Stoqua (Sacred Heart), Corey Johnson and Glenn Thelemaque (West Carleton), Mike Miller (St. Patrick), Jacques Lukusa and Maxime Boursiquot (Immaculata) and Shymar Brewster (Merivale). The team is traveling to Toronto on the 15th to play a game against the always tough York Region All-Stars (6:30 tip-off at Vaughan Secondary). It will be a great tune-up for their game against the Toronto Public All-Stars the next day at Ryerson. House feels good about his team’s chances, “Both games will be a great barometer for where we are in relation to the talent in the rest of the country”. The two opposing teams will boast players from perennial high school powerhouses such as Vaughan, Eastern Commerce and Oakwood. House adds, “there’s no doubt that our guys will be pumped up to play, they have a lot of pride and want to show Ottawa can compete at an elite level.”

The Battle of the Boards is one of the most highly-anticipated high school sporting events of the year. It will be a very entertaining day with a notable presence from a number of college and university coaches north and south of the border. The four games allow coaches to see the very best players team up, and also compete against Ontario’s finest. Many of these players futures are still undecided including West Carleton’s Corey Johnson who will definitely garner much of the attention. Johnson who was a member of Team Ontario this past summer is excited to be selected, “I’m thrilled to be representing Ottawa and the fact that players like Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos, Dayton’s Dyshawn Pierre and Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins also participated in this event makes it that much more special.” The West Carleton guard is being actively recruited by numerous CIS programs but is currently exploring prep school opportunities in the U.S. Johnson and his Ottawa teammates will get together for one practice on Monday, April 14th at St. Pat’s before leaving to take on the GTA’s very best.
