These 20 players made Team Ontario.

Re: Under 16 Ontario team???
Coach Clement - just curious. Assuming this is the team that will represent Ontario at the Canada Summer games in PEI, does this team represent a cross-section of good players from across Ontario or does it represent the best players in Ontario regardless of their place of residence? If this team is not the team thaat is going to the CSG then this question isn't valid. But if it is the CSG team, then what was the criteria used to select this team? And how might this then be different than the issue being discussed on the U16 thread, only happening at the provincial level in this case and not the national level? I tend towards the view expressed by Coach paul on this topic, that one can never get away from politics in these decisions, though that may not mean a negative thing, over things like player selections... perhaps the question posed above is not relevant to this team selection...

Re: Under 16 Ontario team???
The team listed is the Ontario U15 team which will compete at the Summer Nationals in BC. The players were selected following open tryouts in Niagara, Windsor, Sudbury, Ottawa, Waterloo, Toronto, and Mississauga. From the open tryouts 48 players were identified and attended a two day camp at Brock University where the 20 man roster was picked. The final 12 man roster will be chosen after further camps.
From my perspective the coaches did a good job holding tryouts in most regions of the province (sorry Thunder Bay). This was during OBA season with weekend tourneys, so they even held some mid week tryouts to accomodate players who had previous committments. Some kids travelled prety big distances to make these events. They picked a good team. Some picks were easy, example Duane Notice an U15 who was a leading scorer in the U16 FIBA tourney in Argentina. After that there was a lot of parity in ability and the choices were harder.
Back to the question, in my opinion this represents the best players from Ontario who tried out, not a cross section. Almost all of the 20 were from the GTA, so I don't think one could cite regionalism. The big advantage the GTA kids have is that they play good competition all the time. A player from a small town who may have just as good skills is behind because he is not used to the intensity and deep skill level throughout. That is why you will always see GTA kids leading the way. They are not better athletes on average, they have just further developed their game because they are playing at a higher level.
I think the first yeart coaches - Rootes and Steele, did something that hadn't been done previously in going to all the regions to look for players. It ended up being a Toronto centric thing, but not because the tryouts were only held there as in the past. My opinions anyhow.
