Re: YORK REGION !
At the half way point in the York Region schedule their have been a few surprises, but nothing earth shattering.
Here a few examples: Father McGivney winning the East, Thornlea winning their division in the central over Thornhill and GW Williams winning their division in the North over Newmarket (a team Dwill expected more from, NOT me).
As coach Imgrund mentioned above a number of great games have been scheduled in the new year. The games mentioned in the above post are of interest but also games between teams ranked #9 - 16 will spark some interesting results.
The York Region system that is currently being used will definitely create some upsets according to pre-playoff rankings come play-off time. I PERSONALLY do not see these games as upsets but by ranking they would be.
Here are potential teams that are ranked between #9 -12 they I see making the York Region Quarter-Finals:
1) Thornhill 2) Sacred Heart 3) Brother Andre
Unfortunately due to the current system these teams are ranked below teams such as: Thornlea, Brebeuf, and GW Williams. Here is my reasoning for thinking the three teams above will be in the Quarter-Finals.
Although Thornlea beat Thornhill, Thornhill did not play with the full services of Stefan Nastic. Therefore, 90% of everything they do was not available to Thornhill.
Brebeuf, won their division in a three way tie. Could someone please explain the tie-break to me. Woodbridge College had a better point differential.
GW Williams lost in blow out to Dr. Denison. Sacred gave Denison a good game according to the score.
Also, it should be noted, due to the current system, a three way tie in their division for top spot (West Division 2) Woodbridge College can do no better than a #17 seed come playoff time. Therefore, this team would play Vaughan S.S in the round of 16. Truly, unfortunate as I see this team being able to WIN against any team on any given night accept for Vaughan and Dr. Denison.
Therefore, after the next round of games and the first round of playoffs, here is my list of Quarter-Finalists for York Region 2009/2010.
1) Vaughan S.S (will WIN York, are they playing AA, AAA, or AAAA this year????????)
2) Dr. Denison (finalist in York)
3) Father McGivney
4) St. Theresa
5) Markham
6) Sacred Heart
7) Thornhill
Brother Andre
There are many reasons I have selected these teams as Quarter-Finalists. Some include coaching, strength of schedule and number of game changing players to name a few.
I am looking forward to the round of 16 for sure and all of the games within the New Divisions in the New Year.
I understand that my last post was received with negativity and criticism thus I have not posted since. However, I will respond to the criticism by saying "The Truth Hurts". WC Basketball brought up many points that are extremely true. Myself, not being a teacher or involved with High School basketball / sports at all I am ignorant to the practices in schools for getting student athletes to tournaments, etc.. My only question here is --- If programs in York such as Vaughan, Sacred and St. Theresa are getting in tournaments why can't every team???? Oh well, I'm showing my ignorance again...
Anyway, since my last post UNFORTUNATELY ( I am a supporter of York) York teams have had the exact lack of success at tournaments that I stated they would outside the region. Here are some results from the top teams in York at recent tournaments.
St. Theresa 0-3 ( at Senior RimRocker)
Thornhill 0-3 (at Senior RimRocker)
Dr. Denison - 2nd best team in YORK, hands down. Consolation Finalist at Holiday Classic (lost to Jarvis and Laurier, both teams that are HM or 10-16 in the Hooptown GTA top 16, at best.
Brebeuf - win a tournament at Maple H.S. Six team tournament with 4 teams from York. IMO, who cares. The other two teams not even on the radar in regards to being considered a high calibre team.
Therefore, unfortunately I am correct in saying that York needs to improve their results outside the region. For all you boosters, think of York Region as Conference USA (NCAA reference) of the last 2 years. A lower end conference with one dominant team that can compete with the other elite teams of elite conferences.
Conf. USA = Memphis York Region =Vaughan
Hopefully this metaphor will not insult the boosters too much.
Anyway, that's the way I see it.

Brebeuf, won their division in a three way tie. Could someone please explain the tie-break to me. Woodbridge College had a better point differential.
York Observer II[/quote]
According to our playing regulations the following is our tie-break rules;
"Tie Breaking procedures for determining playoff spots and positions:
The following tie breaking procedures will be used when there is a tie for a
playoff spot:
i) head to head competition between tied teams;
ii) point difference between tied teams (max. 15);
iii) point difference between all the games played in their own division.
Note: A maximum of 15 point differential will count in breaking ties (ie.Team A
defeats Team B 95-70; Team A will be credited with a 15 point victory only - not
25 points)."
but according to the YRAA when there is a 3-way tie we are to ASSUME the following (Exactly how it was told to us), the team who has the best point differential among the teams tied (St. Jean de Brebeuf) is taken out and then it goes back to head to head and Maple beat Woodbridge.
I am still puzzled how we could ASSUME the 3-way tie-break formula, even though it is not written anywhere in our playing regulations.
I don't care how we break the tie in our league, as long as we follow whatever is written.

Re: YORK REGION !
Coach Osmond,
I agree with your take on the tie-breaking rule - it needs to be a little more clear and actually written out. Really just one line needs to be added: "In the case that more than two teams are tied, the tie will be broken one team at a time by applying the two-team tie breaking rules."
I remember in Central Division for Juniors a few years ago, there was a FOUR-WAY tie for second! At that time, I believe the tie was broken one team at a time like it was in your case.
York Observer II,
I agree with your take that the games for teams ranked 9 through 16 will be interesting as well, and that there is a lot of potential for teams 9 through 16 to upset teams 1 through 8 for the EXACT reasons you stated. Also, some divisions are quite stacked and you could have the fourth best team in a really strong division delegated to tier 2 (as I believe was the case with Brother Andre last year), while the third best team in a really weak division becomes tier 1.
I was quite suprised that last year in Juniors three of the teams ranked 1 through 4 made the semi-finals, with St. Augustine being upset by Sacred if memory serves me right. Did all four ranked Senior teams last year make the semi-finals? I know Vaughan, Milliken, and STL did but my memory fails me on Denison. Using your NCAA analogy, that's very similar to three or four #1 seeds making the Final Four which I believe is quite rare.
I apologize for not posting the dates and times for teams ranked 9 through 16 as I was going through the master schedule looking for one team at a time and typing out info for one game at a time - not an easy task!
Finally, I agree - York Region teams need to start showing that we can compete better at out-of-town tournaments, with the exception of Vaughan that routinely has success at most, if not all tournaments they enter. I'm curious as to why you believe York Region teams aren't finding out-of-town success. Is it coaching, players, out-of-school basketball experiences, or a combination of all of the above?

My understanding is that last year, Brother Andre did not get their eligibility sheets in until after their first few games. Therefore their players were ineligible and as a result they had to forfeit their first few games. There is no doubt that they should been Tier 1, but their eligibility sheets were not in on time.
"actually all top 8 teams in York made it to the quarters"
I forgot that this happened. We will have to wait and see about this year.
