Since ROPSSAA is 80-90% AAAA schools, the tier 1 playoffs are also the AAAA playoffs.
Schools that are smaller (tier 1 or tier 2) can declare by the deadline and compete in a separate mini-playoff to be the ROPSSAA rep at A, AA, or AAA. If they declare for one of these tournaments, they can still play in the tier 1 playoffs but they cannot be the AAAA rep even if they make it to the final. (e.g. Ascension in girls tier 1 this season.)
If there are more than 8 schools that declare for a level, only the top 8 are allowed to compete. The teams are seeded, based mostly on regular season record, with the tier 1 teams seeded ahead of the tier 2 teams.
