Has a conversation with someone at OFSAA today and a number of questions were answered about allocating berths. Normally there are 16 berths allocated to various regions, plus one extra for each of the host region and the previous year's gold medal region. Under normal circumstances, the berths for this year's tournament in Windsor would be:
Ottawa: 1
Durham: 1
Georgian Bay: 1
Private Schools: 1
York: 2 (1 + gold medal)
Toronto Public: 2
Toronto Catholic: 1
Peel: 2
Golden Horseshoe: 1
S. Ontario: 1
CW Ontario: 2
W Ontario: 1
SW Ontario: 2 (1 + host)
However, Toronto Public is not expected to enter and word out of London is that Thames Valley, the only W. Ontario league with A schools, has suspended play for all teams, public and Catholic. (There was a question of whether or not the Catholic teams would still try to send a rep.) That would leave three extra spots, which would be allocated based on last year's top 4. However...
Gold (York): Already has a 2nd berth included
Silver (Toronto Public): Not competing
Bronze (Private Schools): St. Mike's is the only 4A school
4th (W. Ontario): See above about suspending play
According to the OFSAA official, they would then use the 2010 results. That would provide the three missing berths:
Gold (York): Already has 2nd berth included
Silver (Golden Horseshoe): Will receive extra berth
Bronze (Toronto Catholic): Will receive extra berth
4th (Durham): Will receive extra berth.
So, if W. Ontario doesn't send a team, the berths will be:
Ottawa: 1
Durham: 2
Georgian Bay: 1
Private Schools: 1
York: 2
Toronto Catholic: 2
Peel: 2
Golden Horseshoe: 2
S. Ontario: 1
CW Ontario: 2
SW Ontario: 2
OTOH, if W. Ontario does send teams, it will be:
Ottawa: 1
Durham: 1
Georgian Bay: 1
Private Schools: 1
York: 2
Toronto Catholic: 1
Peel: 2
Golden Horseshoe: 2
S. Ontario: 1
CW Ontario: 2
W. Ontario: 2
SW Ontario: 2
(W. Ontario adds two berths and Durham and Toronto Catholic would lose their extra one.)
I also asked what would happen if going back two years did not fill all the berths and I was told that they would then allow the host region to add a third team, followed by last year's gold medal region then silver, etc. until they were filled.
